You must not throw together some time, you must seize time! Become a master of the illusion that is time! Hee hee - that would help you a lot in life in many situations!
I hope the email you have is the one I have in mind!
So that was the proverbial "it" for poor Doug, eh? He was too young but he did more in his life than most. I hope he likes where he is now!
Take care of yourself, I hope I hear from you soon!

*grin* i will do that...
haha, 'master time'... don't i wish i could. it seems to be running off on me, and i can't seem to find enough of it. if i could, i'd grab a handful so i could study for my government tests and get some photography assignments turned in...... *sigh*

Maybe I can help! Here is one more useful fact for you to remember: you know how all penguins look the same - males and females, there are no external distinguishing characteristic to tell the sexes apart? Well here's one at least: during the mating season, the ones with the muddy footprints on their backs are the females! See, you'll never forget that, now you know something that will instantly prove to anyone that you're an expert in ornithology!

*raises eyebrow after pondering WHY the females would have muddy footprints on their backs, decides not to mention it*
yes... but that's not going to help me much in government...
oh, and THEN, today i found out that i'm failing english. but then again, the highest grade in that class is a D. *sigh*

Government? That's easy: nice guys finish last! Suck up to the big money! Fake sincerity! Go for the lowest common denominator! Exploit the worst in people and in society! What more do you need to know?
How in heck could you fail english?!! You're a some-or-other-editor for a very literate virtual community run by the BBC!!! Oh wait - er how should I put this, here's a tip - use capital letters!!!
My guess is they don't teach you in schools the stuff you *really* need to know!

nope, they don't.
first, government isn't about the THEORY of gov't, it's about the HISTORY thereof. and i LOATHE anything that has to do with history.
as for english, i highly doubt that the color of the main character's dress in chapter three of the book we're reading holds any practical importance in the real world. so i fail quizzes. *shrug* i'm not too torn up about that one.

I actually like history, but not the way it's presented in textbooks. I like to read about mythology and ways of life of people from long ago. I will sometimes go and read up about the ancient Romans, or Attilla the Hun, or Alexander the Great, or about the ancient Chinese or Japanese, or about the Vietnam War, or something like that. A particular topic that I am interested in for the moment, perhaps because I saw something on TV or in a movie or because someone I know talked about it. Then from that particular angle I go and do some reading about the subject. All in all I have by now read and learnt quite a great amount of history!
I think the idea with the quizzes is just to make sure that you actually read the books. You know, it is possible to build up your memory to the degree that you will be able to remember 90% of such trivial content of a book after only a single reading! It would help kids a lot in fact if in school they were taught how their memories worked. Memorisation in such a case would completely cease to be an issue and all tests would be based on understanding and insight.

yep. that's the point of the stupid quizzes. i still hate them; they're pointless. i just contradicted myself. oh well.
i've been attempting to do my english report for... 6 hours or so, now, so my brain is fried. sorry if i make no sense whatsoever.
gov't class is still stupid. i'd rather hear about the PEOPLE, and see what their lives were like. i don't want to hear about the president's pocket veto and how many congressional districts there are!!!

Your contradiction can be resolved this way: you see the point of the stupid quizzes, you merely consider it to be a stupid point!
Why are people so stupid? I mean, actually people are not so stupid, I know lots of great people, but I know many of them to have done some pretty stupid things, I mean that actually hurt people, that may actually have ended up costing lives! Why are our leaders not more responsible? How about a school that can teach me that???

I know how to fix it! I really want to discuss it with you, but it's a bit controversial for h2g2! When are you emailing me back again?

Hi! Happy to hear about your holiday ... did you enjoy it?
How am I? Well, good in some ways, bad in others. I'm preparing, along with my dad, for an exhibition of our art we'll be holding in a month or so. That's good. On the other hand ... my 'net access sucks. That's bad, because there's really a lot of stuff I want to do online and now I can't do it.
What's up with you, apart from the vacation, and the business?

my vacation was fantabulous! i had a blast...
sorry to hear about your 'net access. that's a biiiiiiig bummer. i don't suppose they have internet cafes in south africa....
what's up with me, other than being busy and having been on vacation... hmm... well, i met a lovely young man...

Willem Posted May 24, 2002
What do you mean, no internet cafés in South Africa? Every respectable, moderately-sized town will have at least one! There is a place fairly close to here, I think, where I can go online ... but that will cost extra money, and not necessarily be much faster than my home access.
I can also go to my father's workplace and log on from there ... sometimes it's a bit better than over here.
Very happy to hear about the lovely young man! But is he a *good* young man as well? You deserve only the best!

soeasilyamused, or sea Posted May 25, 2002
i stand corrected!
yes, he is a good young man too. better than me, i fear, but that's another story....
