Just been reading a few of your journals, but I feel guilty about doing so "secretly" - everybody knows about the danger of lurkers smiley - lurk but that doesn't mean I *have* to be sneaky about it.

So thanks for an interesting read! smiley - smiley I hope you're settling in well.

(We have no smilies for bread and salt - the traditional gift for welcoming people to a new home here in Germany - so I'll just leave you some virtual smiley - donutsmiley - coffee.)

Greetings to you! I am confused about people saying they have invaded my place or are stalking about. I thought all writings were in the open. Any person is welcome to my writing. I recall you were a first person to respond to me and welcome me. Thankyou for making me welcome.

As long as you're aware that everything's public here, you should be fine. smiley - smiley People are generally quite polite about not butting in on conversations on people's private spaces that are just between two people, but they won't be angry if you do join in one. smiley - ok

You're quite welcome to the welcome smiley - winkeye It's nice to see some new faces around here. The place will grow on you, I'm sure...

Re the "biro" thing - I saw you were confused about that in another thread - h2g2 generally uses British English, simply because it's based in the UK and many of the Researchers are from there, too. But they all understand American English just fine. (Even if a few people are, alas, rude about it.) So just talk like you normally would. There are a lot of non-native English speakers here, too, who sometimes use odd grammar or expressions, but that just makes it more fun, I think. smiley - laugh

You should hardly notice the difference anyway, except in spelling and in a few words with different meanings. (Like the great "Pants vs. Trousers" debate, to be found here: A129647)

Hello John, welcome to 'hootoo' (that is the nickname that we have here for this site). I wanted to add my welcome also.

I think you will find this is a wonderful site to be a part of. As you are already finding out, there is a sense of community here that has resulted in many of us making friends across the world. I think you can already assume that your fellow hootooers accept you as part of the h2g2 'society' and don't worry, nobody will be worried about those 'rabbit trails' in your writing, lots of us have different ways of writing on here. We don't judge people, we just try to share our knowledge with the world and maybe have some fun along the way. For what it's worth, your journal entries were the most enjoyable thing I have read in quite some time. smiley - smiley

Hi John ~ I have seen your posts from time to time and though I live in a different world to you I enjoy the simplicity and honesty of the way you express yourself.

I have added you to my friends list. This is a h2g2 thing which means that when you write things in your journal I automatically receive a link to it instead of having to look for it.

If you object I will remove it.

I wish you peace in a troubled world.

McKay,
I will be a Luddite sympathiser. I am happy to have a name for what I sometimes feel about the modern world! You have done a service to me.
