There's no reason why a series of maps cannot be self-conflicting, afterall, all of h2g2 is. smiley - smiley

The map is at http://www.h2g2.com/A399422
although it may have gone...?

Amy the Ant - High Manzanilla of the Church of the Stuffed Olive

The map sort of sprang from a conversation that started in the F&F. It was never intended to be detailed because everyone sees h2g2 in their own way. I thought a nice clickable graphic would enhance the first page of BB's Waterworks and volunteered to make one for him. It doesn't have to be a map.

BB described the waterworks to me and I created a map to see if I had understood him correctly. It can be accessed via my page. Here's a shortcut http://www.h2g2.com/A399422.

I wasn't intending to put anything other than BB's creations on it in order to avoid inconsistencies. I was just trying to place other known places like the Cafe and your Atelier for my own amusement and to figure out which bits of the vague map had to be even vaguer than the others. The positioning of CLI across the river was as a result of one of Styx's posts in which he swam across the river before disappearing through an oak wood on his way back home.

Oops the map has disappeared. Nothing I did deliberately. I will investigate.

The map is back. All the graphics from that server disappeared too so there must have been some sort of glitch.

It seems to have re-appeared. smiley - smiley
Overall, I think it is probably better if a map is, for now, only inclusive of the waterworks - deciding what else to include would be a nightmare. But personally I really enjoy the look of the draft map. smiley - smiley

The map's appearance is intermittent. I think there must be a problem with the Easyspace server I am using.

I've got another couple of ideas. I'll do some mock ups and then we can all discuss them. Socially construction of knowledge is what h2g2 is all about, isn't it?

I hope Styx comes back to check on progress. He's useful because he travels far and wide in h2g2.

*places dish of kibble and dish of water on floor by the map, just in case*

I've posted the postcard, in a manner of speaking, but there still seems to be a problem with the easyspace server. If it doesn't settle down I'll switch to another server.

I have switched the picture to another server. It is now available at A400500.

The postcard is at:
http://www.h2g2.com/A400500
and I for one think it is a very good idea - but then I am biased. I'm always pleased what anyone does for the waterworks etc - but this, I feel, would be an extremely useful idea, and hopefully should breathe some life into the waterworks once more smiley - smiley

The map still has great possibilities though. I'm sure a lot of people would like to have a "rough" idea of where things are, it doesn't have to be 100% accurate as h2g2 continuously contradicts itself each day.

OK. I'll work at a postcard with four clickable sections for the Waterworks entrance page and a map that can be accessed from the Waterworks page.

It would also be nice, I think, if people could download the whole postcard and send it by email. In fact I'm thinking of opening a little shop when I retire after the elections. I thought of calling it Graphic Ants and selling postcards, prints and tasteful souvenirs. I could also offer picture framing, code writing, display space for h2g2 artists, photograph developing and poster printing.

I'll talk to TPTB about the postcard sending idea.

Well, make sure you let me know when you've finsihed and when I can possibly start putting the postcards around the Waterworks.

I'm looking forward to this already. smiley - smiley

There's a view of the beach already up on the page but I've done a better one since. I'll finish them all and present them as thumbnails.

I'm very impressed - it's great! smiley - smiley
I've been playing with it for the last few minutes. So, what is going to happen with it?

Will you allow me to have the code for it so I can put copies on all the waterworks pages - or would you like to keep it yourself and, perhaps, form a Waterworks gift shop? It's your great invention - so, am I allowed to use it?

I though it would look good on a central Waterworks page. A modified http://www.h2g2.com/A395156 perhaps. View the source and nick the code.
Make sure you include text links as well for the image-challenged.
You will need to update your user "space" accordingly.

The individual pictures are available at

or I can let you have bigger images or different ones if you prefer.

Just download them to disk or use those addresses if you prefer. They may as well stay there on the Virgin server.

That's an interesting idea. I did consider a centralised h2g2 Waterworks site - I cancelled the entry, though, but I still have the code for what I sent to the post. I can't really use the post article itself, though.

Has the problem of the disappearing pictures been solved?
Also - are you planning on finishing the map idea - as that had great potential. smiley - smiley

What's wrong with using the Post article as a basis? Just add the picture.

I've put the postcard and the separate pictures on the Virgin server in the hope that it will be more reliable than the Easyspace one has been of late. Although there are no guarantees of course. smiley - winkeye

I am still working on the map. I may have to remove the Aroma Cafe due to disagreements about its siting. Although I don't see the problem if I put in the tunnel under the river and a footbridge across it and expand the land around the cafe to allow for the magic forest.

We now have a Town Bridge in h2g2 courtesy of a disjointed effort by Gedge, EV, Styx and myself. Perhaps we should name it and have a ceremony.
