(On Holiday)
Hello, welcome to my home page! This is Miao Hongzhi; the name means "Character Practice Paper" in Chinese. I have just wrapped up fifteen months' study at Peking University; now I am leaving for two weeks' holiday in Japan only to ultimately wind up in Chicago, USA.

For the next two weeks, this naturally-bored-Texan will be travelling in Japan searching for both enlightenment (planned tours of Zen temples in Kyoto) and refreshment (planned searches for the ultimate Japanese vending machine...Beer Vending Machines are just the beginning). So in the mean time, please peruse and post at your leisure. I'll be back on site in late July, 2000. Bye now!

I have a B.A. in both Chinese language and History, and I am working on Guide entries on both subjects. Japanese vending machines are another area of interest for Guide entries.
Once I vowed to "read Chinese characters until my eyes bled", and I have come close on more occasions than I care to recall. I am only too happy to share what I have learned with you- and I'll spare you the pain. If I am able to help anyone with what I've learned, then it was all worthwhile.
Chinese language and Chinese history are wonderfully rewarding, fascinating subjects. It seems that there is interest at h2g2 in both subjects, and if you have any linguistic or historical questions, please feel free to look around here, or post a message. I'd love to discuss these and other topics.
There is no shortage of misinformation out there about these subjects. What's more- let's face it- Chinese language and history are complex, confusing subjects. On the other hand, there is a lot of fun to be had, too- honest!
I am deeply interested in Modern Chinese, Classical Chinese, Chinese historical linguistics and dialectology. Not to mention various kinds of Chinese literature, both Classical and modern. On the History side, I am interested in more modern things, specifically Chinese migration and immigration history, as well as issues of nationalism and identity. I even enjoy talking about politics, when properly provoked. :-P
For those that are interested, I am here to help calm you and explain away the confusion. When I don't know the answer to your question, I'll help you find someone who does!
This page is a work in progress; please bear with me!
