homework time for my son.
trying to help him revise and wondered is there a general rule for deciding whether aword is masculine, feminine or neuter in German?
any help would be wonderful as neither my wife nor I took German at school!
thanks

I'm afraid there is no general rule, no.
I know it's difficult, I had French at school and they have only feminine or masculine and no neuter, but their feminines and masculines are different from German.

Thanks for getting back so soon, guess it is down to memory and use, he's off to the black Forrest next year so will sample the language from natives!
Thanks again x

Yes, there is no other way than to memorize it. In reality people will understand you in most cases no matter if you use feminine, masculine or neuter... but of course school is a different matter.
I hope he'll enjoy his stay there!
