Surely this is what the guide is about not fake virtual gameshows? No offence but it doesn't really work virtually unless you really have no life.

Well considering it's now number one on the busiest forums list. I think you have your answer...

Doesn't sound like them - the Community Editor is an ex researcher - in fact she was saying at the Christmas get together she signed up on the day the site launched. Her number on priority has always been the Community.

Still I have been away for eight months. It might have changed but I like to think not.

was cruising thru the guide.. and my friend's page, and guess what i found? another one of those posts i just can't help but reply to...

yes, that's right. silver something-or-other decided to attack a 'fellow researcher', on the grounds that that researcher's activities don't appear (to silver whatsisname) to be 'what the guide's about'.

well isn't he just the one to decide that?

apparently so, as silver whateveritis says, and i quote, "Yeah us older researchers had noticed - makes me wonder why you are here then?"

i guess THIS is what silvermabob thinks the guide is about? pointing out to others who is an OLDER researcher? intimating that there is some 'gentleman's-CLUB' type thing, composed of those with small numbers? suggesting that THEY don't approve of the activities of the NEWCOMERS????

i call this to question. yes indeed, i do.

i question especially Silver's decision to imply that he/she/it is one of the old crowd, when in fact, we come to find out in a future post that silver hasn't even been here for 8 months. the guide only BEING 14 months old, (minus 8 he's been away) means silver could only have been here a total of 6 months MAXIMUM (IF he/she/it signed up THE FIRST DAY)! tho on further investigation, silver was only involved in h2g2 for approximately TWO WEEKS before he/she/it went on his 8 month hiatus....

GUESS WHAT?? compared to most of US, Silver is a NEWBIE!

HA! how nice it must be to be able to ignore that, simply because one has a smaller number.

(perhaps if MATT had been around then, silver would not have had to post his DAY 2 journal entry, in which he wonders if anyone was going to find him...
perhaps...)

just a note: some day, anyone with a 6 digit number will be an "OLDER RESEARCHER". Hopefully those that will be coming will have a better example of how to behave, so the 7 digiters don't feel like intruders.

and hopefully by then, a member like Matt- an informed, active researcher- will be recognized and appreciated as a valuable member simply for bringing his positive attitude and willingness to contribute to the h2g2 site- the business, AND the community.

tho one doubts that there will be anyone around by then that would be able to recognize or appreciate a positive attitude if it followed their head their arse and bit them.

but then, today is a bad day.
maybe tomorrow will be better.

There is a very interesting article in Time magazine this week about h2g2 which explains about the Guide and the Community. You are all going to use it for different things - some are looking for a pure community site and others want to write for the Guide and learn skills like editing.

The Guide itself as a potential reference database is important as is the Community that puts it together, but having a go at each other is not going to help. Silver Nemesis if you think the guide is important why not write some articles? Matthew please accept that some people adhere strongly to DNA's original idea. And Zax, I think that SN had sort of apologised to Matthew so perhaps the rant was a little out of place

You are all as important as each other in the scheme of things regardless of what your individual contributions are!

I should also point out that that I never wrote any articles as a researcher and spent my whole picking fights. But you did not hear me say that

as i thought.

They were fun fights though - mainly about Charlotte Church and S Club 7...

As a really newbie I would like to say something:

The ranting and ravings etc. in the forums and the more or less fantasy entries might not follow the original idea of the guide, but they have brought a lot of people together who would otherwise not have met. In the "h2g2 freaks" not a lot of people have said what they could have said, but I think its true that all of us NEEDED this place because we could get here something that we really needed and that we could not get in real life because if we show that we need it we will be "freaks". You can see the difference between people who went right in and became invloved like lys or Galaxy Babe or many others, and "normal" people who just registered and never showed up again. I think the whole h2g2 universe is much more important than just the factual and approved guide entries.

I know I sound a bit crazy, but I feel very strongly about this place. I might never get an approved entry, and I am not as witty and fun and eloquent like so many people here but I won't give up on this place because IRL I am a very shy and lonely person, and this is the first time in my life that I am meeting people who like the same things as I do and do not make me feel like freak.

(BTW, we need seriously a "sniff" smiley. I could use one right here. Love you all.)

I apologise for being the latest to intrude on this thread, but I felt I had to.
I would very much like to ditto nim's comments. I too feel that h2g2 has given me something that RL never could. And it's this:
I know that whatever people in the real world think about me, and my appearance or principals, that my personality is not flawed and repulsive- as I used to let myself think sometimes. Ok, teenagers tend to think that way, but this one has found people here who like her, and accept her for what she is. And it's helped immensely
Apart from that, it's also given me incredible work experience (can you imagine how much of h2g2 is going in my personal statement on my UCAS form?) and let me realise a dream or two. As of Monday, I'm a reporter for the Post- a step up for my future career if ever there was one.
I've been here for 6 months, been through the initial fun of getting to know people, the brief period of getting so many responses that you can't be bothered, and ended up being sucked into this thing completely. I've been voted in as an Archangel, volunteered to be an ACE, finally got an approved entry, become a reporter, and made more, and better friends, than I ever have IRL.
All with the help of these groups, that apparently don't adhere to the original principals (take a bow, GAs and Freaks) and the more official ones (yup, the ACEs).
So, I love you guys too

I just wanted to add: I don't know what the ratio of serious entries to approved entries is, but by the number of entries which are approved EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE WEEK some researchers are putting much work in the "original idea" h2g2. So why get upset when others have fun?

Whoever it was who upset zax should be kicked out of h2g2 permanently. He/she/it is spoilsport and stuck-up and therefore has no place here.

I don't think it was any single person who upset Zax. It was the situation more than anything.
But for the record, I'm seriously worried. He hasn't answered my emails, and he's usually really good about it.
Is there anything else we can do?

I can understand why he was upset. h2g2 holds a special place in my heart as well - for many reasons most of which are on site. I know that when things go wrong (which has been quite a lot lately) this is the first place I turn because the support has and is fantastic. You are a deeply special bunch of people - I am honoured to be part of the community and to tend it.

He has not answered my mail either - please let me know if there is anything I can do.

Apparently our Archangel is back- minus a Y chromosome. Yup, it would seem that I'm not the only female Archangel anymore.
Zax says that "she" is a girl called Laura- and her room-mate had been using her account without her knowledge.
I don't know if this is true- it sounds unlikely. I wish he/she would just get over whatever it is and came back to us for real. Maybe I'm taking this too far, but whoever it was I got to know, I think I got to know them pretty well, and all this crap is worrying me.
And Zax- if and when you read this, I'm sorry if I've just insulted you or whatever, but can you get this over with? Please- I'm already crazy with stress (my exam results are out tomorrow) and this is not helping. Please?
