Whoami - iD dislikes punctuation

Do you really want to take Edited versions with you? You see, the specific style and requirements of the Edited Guide aren't all the same as wikipedia.

Still, it's worth trying, I suppose. I'm not sure what they'll say, but I doubt it'll do any damage just asking nicely...

I just heard the news! This is truely terrible. I would ask you to stay, but I'm sure you have thought it through and won't change you mind. Although I do hope Jim will see this and make Who's Online optional as a result, then your leaving would not be all bad.

You have really made a difference here, and will be missed. Goodbye. smiley - sadface

I don't want "Who's online" to be optional! If Lucinda doesn't want people knowing he is online, he should just logout. He can continue to lurk for as long as he wants and no-one will know he is there.

Lucinda, the BBC owns the copyright on the Edited Guide Entries, but you own the copyright on the originals that you submit to Peer Review. You can do anything you like with them if you wrote them.

Hi Jordan and Gnomon and everyone,

The situation with copyright goes as follows. Researchers have shared copyright with the BBC on *everything* that goes into h2g2, Edited and unedited alike. That means that if you write an entry you can publish it elsewhere. But if anyone else has been involved in the process, then you should ask their permission. So that means, especially on Edited Entries, checking with co-authors, sub-editors and getting permission from the BBC (as we've had some input into the Entry by that stage).

Hope that helps smiley - smiley

We have wrote with great endurance,
And we now have our assurance,
That our entries come with us when we go! smiley - musicalnote

Thanks, Anna, for that information on copyright.

My coin-collecting sources tell me that there are 16 Annas in a Rupee, but I feel that there is only one Anna!

I'll see what happens on a case by case basis. Some things are more appropriate than others, of course.

I have only one remarque...

you have to agree that H2G2 after the BBC took over we had lot less freedom and H2G2 is now getting more and more freedom. I think it will get more freedom in the future.

I'm curious, what do you mean by this:

"* Decentralized. h2g2 is centralized, and it is becoming more so over time. I think a more decentralized approach would suit me better."

What would a decentralized website be like?

Well, if it's centralisation you're running off to, avoid http://www.everything2.com/ like the plague. They have some smiley - weird rules that can be restrictive, and the Gods there are indeed mighty. And sometimes full of themselves. smiley - erm

pheloxi - Personally, I think that the underlying trend is moving towards (as you put it) 'less freedom'. It's just a feeling. Of course, there are advantages to that.

Tango - it would be like http://www.wikipedia.org - or, to a lesser extent, everything2.

Whoami - yes, the Gods have lots of powers and such that 'initiates' don't have, but I'm talking about decentralisation, not equality. principle of subsidiarity and all that...
