h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I'm a bookworm. When I was a kid I spent all my money on books, a lot of it in a little children's bookshop in Windsor. I can't remember the name of the road, but as you walked away from the castle, down Peascod Street and just kept going, the road widened a little (I think) the bookshop was on the left,opposite a hobby and toy shop (where, incidentally, I entered a competition to design Barbie clothes, and won a Doll, 3 outfits and a Barbie bracelet)

anyway...

One of my favourite set of books is out of print. I have only ever found the first, really expensive, on Amazon second hand. Now I have found that and one other available on eBay.

I hadn't realised there was a fourth, I'm looking for that now.

Have you ever tried abebooks? that's what I try before trying ebay

What are the books called, you could try second hand book sites, my mum's had success with them tracking down out of print books for her

if I tell you what they're called, you have to promise not to outbid me!!!

The first one is called Green Smoke by Rosemary Manning. It's about a little girl who goes on holiday to Cornwall and meets a dragon. Set in modern times. The second is more of the same, but I think he goes to her house (not sure what it's called, possibly Dragon in Danger which is the second book in the package)

There's a third when they go back to Camelot (King Arthur's time), which I absolutely adored as a child. And now I discover there's a fourth.

I've bought many books through abebooks, quite a lot from England-the shipping fee being mostly higher than the costs of the books, but still much cheaper than buying new books. And you can search for special books, i.e. you say what you are looking for, and once it is on offer somewhere in the world, they'll let you know.

Uuups, was slow with the typing. For books from within Germany, you usually wait for the bill ( you generally have this option ) for books from abroad, i pay with my credit card. They're really quick, it never takes long until the book is there - i have made some -near bad experiences with ebay.

BK1: Green Smoke
BK2: Dragon in danger.
BK3: The dragon's quest. (set in Arthurian times).
BK4: Dragon in the harbour.

these are the books I want. If anyone has them or sees one, and it's under a tenner, if you get it I'll pay you back.

even if I end up with 6 of each. I'd never heard of Book 4, so this is more than exciting if I can get it.

I'm wondering why they went out of print, maybe I should get hold of Puffin - after all, dragons are big biz in children's books these days.

There are a few nice German books with dragons, but i would have to search for them. If I find them,you can have them when we meet.

Not a problem Sho, I guess Jacqueline Wilson is popular amoung kids now, Alex is into Yu-gi-oh at the moment and is having great fun reading the books back to front, even tho they are in English they are printed in the Japanese way of right to left.

True but it's only been the last 10 years or so that she's really become popular with girls. She's appearing in our local Ottakers next weekend

When I was a lassie, my mum got me membership of the Puffin Club. There used to be an exhibition every Easter holidays in London (usually at the Commonwealth centre, I think) and we used to go up from Windsor on the bus.

Fantastic stuff. I used to love getting my books signed, and getting little snippets of information about the writers, and getting my magazine through the post.

The club is still going, I might see if the Gruesomes fancy it.

Back onto children's books, I find that my two like most things that I read, but the more fantasy the better. At the moment it's Gobbolino the Witche's Cat. We did Bad Girls by Jacqueline Wilson, but they didn't like it as much. But then, I think they might be a tad too young.

The Hobbit next though - oh, look, and right up our street!

The hobbit is great stuff, I loved it - love it still, like the other Lotr books
