there're a couple of things i've been sort of meaning to ask you. although i don't necessarily expect an answer to either...but it would be nice. ok, a) what course did you apply to do at oxford? and b) where does the name uncle heavy come from?
right, hope those aren't too taxing for you, i'll be off to shout at the other windows which are doing NOTHING!!!

1) I'm studying philosophy and Theology at Trinity
2) The ~Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. I reckon it makes me sound hard and yet wry and ironic. everyone else reckons it makes me sound like an avuncular obese person. who says imagination isnt dead?
and those werent too taxing or too hard to answer...

why did
a) you mention me to your family (not that i mind )
b) your family think i was forty?
and i forgive her. its not like i minded. she sonded distracted and i was going to say anything terribly deep...

Clelba Posted Jan 20, 2002
insane? i dunno...mebbe it's not...but don't take offense, i'm insane too...
erm...i mentioned you to my family...cos...erm...you're someone i talk to a lot
and they thought you were some 40 year old guy cos of the uncle part i spose...and the heavy sort of implies that you have a little middle-aged spread...that's only the way they see it though, do'nt blame me for anything!!

the name, to me, suggests a devilish sleek gangsta hardness, utterly at odds with my actual personality. to everyonwe else, it suggests avuncular obesity, and perhaps sugar daddy-ness...

I always thought you were older, but I didn't think you were fat, just rugby-playeresque
And I didn't think he was that heavy (but then, I was only holding his hand, *you* had his arm over his shoulder)

no comment.
aside from the fact that I think philosophy is the new black and everyone should wear it.

It's dead interesting - occasionally it gets labelled as being obtuse, too abstract not relevant etc - I think it couldn't be more relevant. You see so many moral issues being raised today, understand the positions and assumptions that are made to back up certain positions and the arguments that are used in the process is of fundemental importance.
To take current example - Bush has declaired war on terror. You might ask if he is justified in doing that. Can you wage a war on terrorism - or is it just between states - what is a state for that matter? How do you belogn to a state (think about the kurds today & the jews in 1940's). Does morality have a place in war? (why not just nuke 'em?) is there such a thing as a "just war".
Terrorism has been branded as evil - what is evil?
Is murder in the name of god (or justice) allowable?
what is justice?
and not forget the famous dilmemma that one mans terroist is another man's freedom fighter. - is there a difference between the two?
and that's not even touching on the bio ethics of stem-cell research, abortion, genetic enginering or the enviornemntal debate: do we have a moral obligation to protect the earth for future generations?
No, philosophy is alive and kicking and chances are, if you thought about these issues at all, you've prbably made a start on thinking philosophically already.
