What an ignorant thing for that person to say! Some people think they have all the answers when they haven't been in the same boat. It's very easy to judge in retrospect: a bit of hindsight makes us all geniuses.

Here's a thought... contact mortgage people and phone people. Offer to pay parts of the bills now, and agree on a deadline (5 months?) when you pay the rest. Use some money for firewood.

Good point. Things like phone companies sometimes have schemes for people who are having trouble paying. Might be worth giving them a ring.

The bank is not interested in any deals. They are happy to have me paying more interest. The phone company doesn't negotiate - in this town they have no competitors.

Nope, they never are. Usually they are just ing bad. Hope dies after me only. Things will be bad-bad if I don't log on anymore - that would mean that my phone company got pi$$ed off and unplugged me. So far I'm here.
