Route 66 for Number Six
broelan Started conversation Sep 4, 2006
Many, many years ago, at the dawn of h2g2 (well, it seems like it anyway) you posted a scrap of an entry on Route 66 in the Collaborative Workshop. I sort of stole the entry and ran with it; and now nearly a decade later (well, more like three years) I'm finally nearly finished with it.
I thought since the whole thing was your fault you might like to come have a look at the result. Or not. I know you don't have the kind of time you used to.
Anyway, if you're interested, it starts here: A12489483

>>Poke<<
I figured I could leave the subs' page alone and do this on your space.
I understand busy, and priorities offline. I don't expect this do be done in a day (or a week... a month might be nice) - it took me nearly three years to write.
Take your time and do a good job. I'll check in once a week or so and see how you're coming. If you have questions or need more info just ask.
And thanks a million for taking this on.

You've successfully poked me into running an eye over A12490265. What d'you think? Only a couple of spellings and minor revisions...
What shall I do next? You pick!

I've been through the lot now and found a few minor spellings and punctuation glitches, but it's all very good
What do we do now? Shall I submit them, or wait until I've had a chance to see if I can find any other h2g2 links?

Oooh, do Missouri next: A1304623
Here's why - California was the very last entry I wrote for the project, Missouri the first. There's three years between them and I know my writing has evolved quite a bit in the interim. I'm concerned that the difference in the quality of the work will be rather obvious, but when I re-read them before turning it over I honestly couldn't come up with anything to improve on the Missouri page.
Have a look, and suggest what you think it might be lacking, or put my mind at ease that it's not as bad as I think it is.
Thanks!

Somehow I completely missed your second post (although it appears I replied to it ).
I'll read through them today. There will be one more link to add to a couple of them, for the Harvey Houses, that was just picked from PR and is going through subediting now.

Okay, I've gotten through three of them, if you don't mind here are a couple of things I would like to change or that would be brought up in PR:
On the Main page:
Under the subheader 'Spending the Night on the Road' can you change 'the Lincoln in Oklahoma' (last sentence) to 'the Wigwam Village in California' with this link: http://www.wigwammotel.com/
.... more in a minute, just got interrupted...

Sorry...
Still on main page -
Under header 'The Big, The Bright and the Beautiful', third para, last sentence 'Travellers can even sleep...' change to 'Travellers can still sleep in a wigwam on 66 at the Wigwam Village motels in Arizona and California.' (because of earlier change)
Under header 'The Road Goes On', first para, last sentence 'Even into 21st Century...', change to 'In the 21st Century the old road continues to inspire...' (to avoid repetition of 'even' twice in sentence).
On Illinois page -
In the intro, second para, please link Missouri to A2998542
Under header 'Servicing the Engine as Well as the Curiosity' first para: "The beautifully restored Odell Standard Station in Odell sold petrol from 1932 into the 1960s serviced cars until 1975 when it closed for good." change to "The beautifully restored Odell Standard Station in Odell sold petrol from 1932 into the 1960s and continued to service cars until 1975 when it closed for good."
On Missouri page -
Under header 'What to Do' third para: rumored should be rumoured, shouldn't it?
Off to read some more

Oklahoma -
Under header 'The Birthplace of the Mother Road', last para, last sentence, the link to the 'historic preservation society' needs a title tag, probably should be called "Oklahoma Route 66 Preservation Society"
Under header 'Oklahoma City and Beyond', first para, third sentence, capitol city should be capital city. Capitol refers only to the actual building, capital is where it's located. I had this discussion at length when I wrote the Missouri state entry (I was wrong then).
New Mexico -
Footnote 2 (first header, second para), could we add something like "Though widely reported, this story is unconfirmed... and likely untrue. States elect major government officials in even-numbered years, and New Mexico records do not list a new governor taking office in 1937." I'd feel better about not perpetuating the myth, but it's such a good story
Under header 'Rest Your Head', third para, '...the La Fonda was originally a Harvey House...' change to 'was at one time a Harvey House'. I found out it didn't become a Harvey property until 1925. There will be a link for Harvey House in the near future.
California and Kansas look fine. I'm still looking at Arizona, but didn't want to lose my notes

Last one!
Arizona -
Under subheader 'Take it Easy', first para after quote:
'...the La Posada Hotel, an old restored Harvey House ...'
Harvey House will link to that entry when it's edited.
Under subheader 'Don't Forget Winona', last para, 'The Frey Marcos Harvey House is a depot on the Grand Canyon Railroad...' change to 'The Frey Marcos, another former Harvey House, is now a depot...'
And, California (I know I said I read it, but then I realised I hadn't).
Under header 'A Gruelling Trek', third para, there will be the last link for the Harvey House entry. As soon as I have an A# for this I'll get it to you.
Next para, should 'desert crossers' be hyphenated?
Under header 'Where the Cars Are', second para, I've used the phrase 'turn of the century'. I think given that Route 66 was a 20th century phenomenon it's pretty obvious *which* turn of the century is being discussed, but I've gotten in trouble for this phrase before. Should it be more specific?
Thanks a million, Six! You're a
