I wonder if the discrepancy comes from the fact that some postings were moderated along the way?

mm, I seem to remember that did cause problems at one stage; not sure what I did about it in the end - or when, and whether it could have mucked up the data for 3N... 
like I say, much polishing to do (and much work I should be doing instead), but now to bed...
