You can call me TC

I remember riding tricycle rickshaws in Dublin at the H2G2 meet. I think they were offering free rides, so we all jumped in.

The first rickshaws were invented in France. How many are left? smiley - huh

By the way modern bicycle-rickshaws have a two seated sofa in front of the cyclist. This gives the passenger a better view and protects the cyclist in case of collisions smiley - prof

Baron Grim

When I noticed the mentions of rickshaws, I was going to add the apocryphal story I had heard that credited the invention of the rickshaw to an American missionary in 1869 to transport his ailing wife around the streets of Yokohama. But first I wanted to confirm it since so many things I thought I knew are always factual, and I hate spreading B.S.

That one "might" be true. While the French did previously invent basically the same conveyance (they named them "vinaigrettes" because of their resemblance to the carts of vinegar sellers) the Japanese rickshaw was independently invented in Japan in 1869. Who actually invented it is unknown (and two other Americans take credit for it) and it's Japanese origin is accepted as occurring in Tokyo in 1869. The name is derived from the Japanese word jinrikisha, which literally means human powered vehicle (jin-human, riki-power/force, sha-vehicle).

I remember an American claiming his grandfather or some other forebear inventing it. The inventors name was of course Rick Shaw smiley - rolleyes

" modern bicycle-rickshaws have a two seated sofa in front of the cyclist."[Pierre]

Doesn't that make it hard for the driver to see where he's going?

No. The drivers are high up on their saddles and can easily see over the heads of the passengers who are sitting comfortably in their low sofa

My health was so bad that I didn't even have to appear for the military fitness test. My doctor sent some information and then I got a letter saying I was discarded. Fine with me! smiley - smiley

Later it turned out that the doctor's assessment was greatly exaggerated smiley - biggrin

That didn't last, though, but I'm alright. For my age. Mustn't complain

While studying I found a half time job. After a month the boss promoted me to full time. Four days later I was sacked. No explanation.

But I survived and it was a shitty job anyway smiley - biggrin
