A thought struck me today:

I'm half Danish so of course I share the famous British humour. After all it is one of the many good things us Vikings brought to the British islands smiley - winkeye

I'm also half German and contrary to common belief we have humour too. Lots!

We just don't share it smiley - laugh

"I'm also half German and contrary to common belief we have humour too. Lots!"

I think the trouble is that unless your grasp of that language is good enough to stop contantly feeling like hard work, you don't notice the puns and other word play. Political jokes, satire, and ones about celebrities generally soar right over the heads of outsiders, as they just don't notice the subtle references and national running gags.

Hence the widespread British belief that German comedy (and French, for that matter) begins and ends with slapstick or lavatorial humour. smiley - erm

Very well put, Herenna smiley - ok

I'm sure the Brits, Danes, French and most others would warm very much up to German political humour in particular if it were translated. The smiley - book "Der Flüsterwitz im Dritten Reich" ("The Whispered Jokes of The Third Reich") is a good place to start.

I will give you an example later, but have to smiley - run right now...

I'm back smiley - nur with a classic:

Hitler and Göring are taking Adolf's new Mercedes out for a spin one fine summer day when the Führer accidentally runs the limo over a pig, which instantly dies smiley - flyingpig

"Oops, this is not good for my reputation", says Hitler smiley - erm
"smiley - dontpanic says Göring", "I'll sort it out smiley - ok"

So the big man enters the farmhouse and returns a few minutes later with a huge pork roast under one arm, a goose under the other, pockets filled with butter and smiley - cheese, a long string of sausages wrapped around his neck and a smiley - biggrin on his huge face.

"How did you manage that", the flabbergasted Führer asks smiley - huh
To which Göring replies:
"Oh, I just walked into the kitchen and said "Heil Hitler, the swine is dead"

It's an episode of Stephen Fry's quiz show QI ( = Quite Interesting) from BBC Entertanment - and this episode's theme is Germany. And it is in fact QE ( = Quite Entertaining) smiley - biggrin

I'm subscribed to another UToob channel with QI that I can view in my country so I'll try to remember to catch this episode next time I get a chance to watch it. Maybe Sunday afternoon while I do laundry. smiley - thief

re 29:

While watching it I found another quite uncanny (QU) coincidence. At 28:44 (I think it was) Fry explains Godwins Law, which I just discussed somewhere on Facebook smiley - doh

What I learned is you should just point to Hitler or the Nazis in order to stop any conversation

So I guess this conversation is over now smiley - rofl

But it's December now so the show is over anyway

Thank you for watching smiley - biggrin
