Pierre de la Mer ~ sometimes slightly worried but never panicking ~ Started conversation Jun 13, 2014
During the recent Manchester meet I became aware of the sad fact that h2g2 is not making as much money as desired - and that I was part of the problem since I use Adblock Plus
I am about that but am glad to tell you that I have now effectively turned off Adblock Plus on h2g2 and urge everybody else to do the same

I disabled adblock+ for h2g2.com as soon as I could, but unfortunately my work computer and the network it is on has its own adblocker. It even blocks the top paid links on google searches in such a way that I can't click those links even when I legitimately want to.
One thing I would suggest is for h2g2 to add a few "thank you for not using adblock" banners and maybe throwing a few bonus pics onto the ad frames occasionally like reddit does. It incentivises users to disable adblock if they know they might miss bonus content.

I'll definitely give h2g2 advertisers preference if they're advertising something I need.

I should have disabled the adblocker long ago, of course. In my defense I simply wasn't thinking
That's a great idea, baron

Well, they might. The ads are directed to the customer based on all that data we leave as we wander around the interwebs. Your ads will will be very different from my ads. You won't get ads for businesses in the greater Houston/Galveston area. You (probably) won't get ads for the latest HJC motorcycle helmet (that I already bought, so stop with the ads already!).

I get ads that are surprisingly astute and focused. I'm assuming that adblock is not afflicting my relationship with h2G2.

Sneaky move
A click through to an Ad increases the payments to the site
But don't over do it or Google assumes you are attempting to fiddle the system.
So only click on ads you have some interest in.
Hotels in Manchester have been assisting the site in the lead up to the meet

Thanks for explaining, Bald Bloke. I didn't know that before. The ads for Savane pants are great, as I could stand to buy more [not for use now, but in the Fall after it gets too cold for shorts]

I didn't know that's how the ads work -- I thought it was sufficient to be here in Pliny, with ads. And the ads don't always help here. Corporate overlords are in PA, so that's where the wifi account is paid for. I keep getting ads focused on the Philadelphia area. Silly Google.

Another theory is that Adams was taking a cue from George Orwell, who inverted digits when he wrote 1984 in 1948. Adams would have turned 24 in 1976. Hitchhiker's guide to the Universe premiered in 1978, but Adams might have started work on it in early 1976, when would still have been 24. 24 inverted is 42.
