I don't think rum and ropes are in any way connected. I used to have rum in my kitchen cupboard, and a rope in my office at work. Both instances were coincidences.

It was a second-floor office where I cataloged books. At the time, there was nbo fire escape, so I tied one end of the rope to the radiator. In casew of fire, I could open the window and climb down to the ground.

I think that is awful, even if you are fit. Hit the fire alarm and wait for trouble when the fire dept finds the library to be illegal.

An accessible window in a room on the second floor counts as a fire escape even if there's nothing to climb, because it can still be reached by a fire truck ladder.

I never thought of that, Malabarista. Good point!
They put in a fire escape eventually, but I kept the rope. Eventually, I left that job for one on the main floor of the same building.
