It is an interesting idea; I suspect though that H2G2 is a very big site with thousands of visitors every day.
This therefore will need a very big and exclusive server.
I would like to see H2G2 moved to Facebook, I can put up with the ads.
I don't like to lose my home, I'm here most days. Good luck because I think we need it.

I heard that google is going to be hiring more workers this year. That must mean they have some extra money. Maybe they would be a good host.

It would be kind of nice to be independent of super huge entities that might dump us if their bottom line isn't up to snuff. That's my biggest concern. We need to be nurtured, and can learn to do it ourselves. I am not sure that we should be a tiny part of a very different entity.

If you want it:
http://hitchhikers-guide-to-everything.co.uk
is free for the group.
I did think of Ford but the ones available are a tad expensive.

What you need is a plan
1) 6 or more programmers, with ability to deal with GML. I don't mean somebody who can write in it.
2) Hardware experts, possibly hosting the site,
3) accountants to manage the cost,
4) Lawyers, to write the copyrights ect.
5) Pirates to make sure everybody is having fun.
6) Somebody in charge who can be sued. don't like that bit.

There is more activity in my wellies than on that site; don't get too excited or optimistic.

Re-posting fund raising ideas to help save h2g2:
> The complete h2g2 on DVD or removable disc drive (typically about a gigabyte capacity).
Price above expenses should be at least a like amount to the expense, posted to a trust fund to provide long term maintenance of the site.
Questions so far raised (I deliberately made that as open and generalized as possible) the edited Guide/approved entries only, or a more comprehensive package?
There are a number of packages possible. Not least, some of the most important and exciting things being done here are in the conversational threads.
> Backup your own personal space (everything), DVDs or removable memory, available on order on an expense basis like that above, or a download available online free of charge, contributions accepted, proceeds after expenses deposited in trust fund to provide for long term maintenance of the site.
I'm not the one to do either the legal or technical work required, but I'm sure there are many people aboard with h2g2 who can.

There have been offers of money in spades from all quarters - but I'm not convinced we're actually going to need a vast sum of money. What would we be doing with it all?

"...what would we do with it all?"
Go independent perhaps?
The thing that frightens me most about money is potential for a money scandal.
The products and services mentioned are things which I think would have a strong demand.

As time goes by, it seems that there are more and more entities that need saving. The Depression was not stopped when the governments bailed out failing institutions. It just got slowed down and made longer....
