Hi Pierce, Jim has asked to pass on a message saying that he won't be replying to any emails or be on h2g2 until he has recovered from a bad bout of flu which could be at the earliest on Saturday when will be able to get the cyber cafe or later.

I have heard again from Jim and he says he feels better now but it was too cold to go to the cyber cafe as they don't have any heating for the shop and he can't access h2g2 at the library it has a security block on the site. ++

Hi Pierce, I wonder if you can help as I have lost my sound completely from my computer. I have done a complete check of my sound systems including my inbuilt speakers in my monitor but they came out as okay.
I am running a Microsoft Windows XP 2002 Home edition, Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600. The system manufacturer is Packard Bell NEC and the system type is X86-based PC. Total Physical Memory 768.00 MB, Available Physical Memory 338.68 MB,
Total Virtual Memory 2.00, GB Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB. Computer Intel Pentium 4.
The audio device I have is SigmaTel Audio for sound playback and sound recording. For the Midi music playback it is Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth.
Thank you

At the bottom right of your screen you should find a loudspeaker-symbol. If you do and you click it there should appear a small panel, where you can turn the volume up and down
Maybe you have one of those modern keyboards where you can (accidentally) turn off the sound by clicking one of the buttons?
If this isn't helpfull check all your connections and/or turn the computer off, remove the power chord for a minute or two and start it up again
This is all the advice I can give you, I'm afraid , not being a computer myself, just a wee bit experienced

Lol, my words "not being a computer myself" should of course have been "not being a computer expert myself"

Pierce, I have rectified the problem through the Microsoft website and now I am making sure that I am up-to-date with all my Microsoft updates, so that I won't miss any.

Good for you
I don't have these problems since I changed back to
It is an old i () so a lot of software can no longer be updated (solves a lot of problems!) but it w*rks fine for me: Browser with ad filter, a simple text program and tons of music is all I need. And it w*rks very well as a dvd player too (with 27'' screen)

I remember this first time I went on a computer it was an IBM BBC Database and used a separate word processing computer with it's function keys. It was only in the mid 90's before I started to used Microsoft Word.
