Somewhere, over the rainbow... in a galaxy far, far away...
...there was a hole. A deep hole. And within this hole a small lizard, gorgeously shaded in everchanging mottled multicolored hues made its home. It was a sensitive, highly intelligent creature with a taste for adventure, although it might perhaps be more accurately termed a flirtation with death. But with its amazing (and automatic) ability to blend in thoroughly with whatever it happened to be next to (one could even consider it a variant of the famed "Somebody Else's Problem" effect as bestowed by Mother Nature), the odds of it ever being discovered, let alone killed, were astronomically high.
Anyway. One cold, dreary winter's morning it decided to set off exploring. It thought that it might be a good opportunity to work on its special project -- which was to develop the ability to consciously control the coloration of its skin, so that it could stand out in a crowd. To blaze like the sun in deepest night, to embody an inky void of blackness on the sunniest afternoon. To bring red where there was blue, green where there was orange, and stripes where there was plaid! YES! To be...different. To truly be in charge of its own destiny.
Naturally, it was well aware of the old Japanese maxim that the nail that sticks out gets hammered down. But hey, no guts, no glory, right? Right.
So, taking a deep breath (which really wasn't very deep as it had the lung capacity of a thimble), it slipped out of its hole and slid downhill through the icy slush, instantly losing its rainbow shimmer to dirty grey.
