They're normally called "ceramic" although they do look like glass.

I think they would have to be called something else in Spain as J is pronounced as a sort of 'H' but harshly. The name of the letter is 'Jota' Clear your throat and spit.
oh and out of interest I realise there is a swear word that sounds a little similar to that!

Surely you have an equivalent to a pound shop there, Lanza. I love going into those. You can't go in with a list, you just pick up things that you've been meaning to get for ages but haven't seen in shops anywhere else, or you pick up things (notably cleaning agents and equipment) that you're going to use anyway. You would probably have got a packet of 6 or 10 for a euro.
The symbol in Post 19 looks like a question mark in a diamond to me. I'll stick to writing the word out.

It's interesting that J is called Jota in Spanish. Originally I and J were the same letter, and they came from the Greek letter Iota.

I always think of that bit in 'Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade' when the I/J discussion comes up.
In the future, posh people will be born with silver dishcloths in their mouths.

But surely living in a Euro country, there is less benefit - not as many items for offer in a Euro shop

TC, no there is nothing like that in this town. I wish there were, I love the one in the town in N Staffs, where you come across all sorts of bargains that you just have to buy.
There are no large supermarkets either.
If I had a car I could go to the one and only Lidl on the island, but hiring a car purely to go shopping rules out any savings I may make. There have been recent protests at the cost of food, as the other supermarkets are owned by just a couple of families and it seems that they can charge what the hell they like.
Other food outrageous prices ( to my mind) are cereals, 24 Weetabix cost 3.80 € - other Spanish brands are equivalent, its not just the Weetabix that is pricey.
Yes, I'd been struck by the jot, iota thing and that j and i are the only dotted letters in the alphabet. I'd not realised they'd had a shared past. I learn something everyday.

Isn't the reason why something "doesn't make an iota of difference" or "doesn't make one jot of a difference" because of a church schism way back in the dark ages? The inclusion or exclusion of the letter i in a specific word changed something fundamental in what people believed. Or something. Perhaps.
Ohh, butterflies.

In German, I and J are interchangeable, especially as the initial letter of a word. This is going out of fashion now, though, as more and more English words become acceptable and familiar.

I just plain don't worry about bacteria on my dishcloths. The washing machine at the landromat gets them clean, and I use an all-temperature laundry detergent. Whatever bacteria there are on my dishcloths are *my* bacteria, and I'm used to them by now.
