Nope, not following, just examining the artistic merits of early 21st century illumination devices... (you can tell I've been to the pretentious entry can't you?)

but of course
But I find these post modernist lamppost to be artistically lacking from their counterparts in the early 20th century...

Ah but one must admire the economy of material and the use of light to throw those wonderfully precise forms on the pavements over the sheer pollution of the night sky fostered by the cast-iron behemoths preferred bt our antecedents

Regrettably I have to admit my ignorance over exactly when sodium lamps were invented. However, I believe that the lamps on Elvet Bridge in Durham predate the majority of them, and further I do not believe that they exhibit the "sodium glare" of modern day street lamps, which, truth be told, don't decrease light pollution by any major degree, because they are relatively few in comparison to lampposts from the 1960s, for example.
But of course, by having streetlights in one's neighbourhood one admits that one is part of a big city. Streetlights may be seen as... passé

Surely one wouldn't want to live in the country with all those burning cows? It is far more advisable to abide at the heart of the urban sprawl, ideally positioning yourself to critique the attempts of unsophisticates to imitate your individual sytyle.

Yes, I suppose that one can only get true culture in the middle of a city... whilst one can always listen on Radio 3, its not the same as being there to hear L'oiseax de feu, or le Sacre du Printemps at the Bridgewater...

How very true. Though it is always worth the trip to the country for Glyndebourne.

I'm never quite sure... whilst of course the music is excellent, there are always those show-off types who only go to be seen picnicing...

That, of course, backfires the following day when their boss discovers they are not, in fact, as ill as they claimed when they took the day off work...

Well quite. One doesn't really want to associate with those kinds of people. One doesn't really know what to say...

In such cases one should keep one's opinions for a more appropriate audience.
And how does one explain the level of pretentiousness achieved in this forum?

It's a curse, really it is.
I got up early (for me) today to try and get sopme work done this morning, only to find that all the clocks had gone forward so it wasn't as inmpressive as I had thought

Ugh no-thanks, the assignment's due in tomorrow. I prefer to finish these things at least a day before they're due in, well 12 hours anyway. I've a feeling there could be another all-nighter coming on....
