A Personal Answer
It's interesting what reading can trigger in your mind, and Mr. Douglas Adams certainly had a wonderful way of triggering all manner of interesting things.
My concept of life, the universe, and everything is in part due to my laughing at the world in general. It also comes from appreciating and enjoying the world. This all comes from reading The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and understanding that you can enjoy life in your own way.
I have developed my own personal answer to the question of "Why am I here?" or "What is life for?" or "What do you get when you multiply six by nine?"
The answer is You.
In something of a buddist way, I have come to believe that this idea of "God" translates into everything that exists. I don't think there can be a cleaner way to fit all of science and real theology into one little neat package.
More importantly, YOU are God. This explaination comes from reading the wonderful book "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Mr. Robert Heinlein (sp?). "Thou Art God" is a powerful though, and only somewhat true, in my opinion.
If you are to believe in the law of conservation of energy, then you can understand that energy exists and is never destroyed. When you die, your energy becomes dispursed in the universe. This happens slowly over time. After you cease to be concious and alive, you still continue to contribute to the universe.
If you are still contributing, perhaps you can control what happens to this energy or these atoms that once were under your control. Maybe you can't. Or perhaps you get a chance to eventually control atoms from a different viewpoint.
I wonder if energy is conserved, perhaps time is connected and conserved. If the universe expands and contracts again, what happens to time? I am beginning to think it's circular. What comes around, goes around again. It's not reincarnation exactly, but a continuation of controlling energy.
The Universe is infinite in time and space because it's connected front to back. Perhaps something like a Mobius strip, but I wonder if you come back around again, starting from somewhere else in the Universe.
What do you think?

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
