What now?
Hi,
I'm Gareth, a 21-year old student - for the time-being. I'm currently awaiting the final results of my Artificial Intelligence with Psychology degree at Edinburgh University, and I hope to graduate with a 2-1 in the middle of July. I play rugby for Murrayfield Wanderers - a Scottish Premier Div. 2 side, and live with my three flatmates Aaron, Dave, and Paul, all of whom also graduate soon!
I suppose I'm at a stage in life where I need to make some plans. In the short-term, that involves getting drunk beyond redemption with my friends as they finish their exams (I was one of the lucky ones who finished comparatively early). In the medium terms, I'm doing a lot of off-season fitness work over the summer and, money permitting, aim to go travelling with my girlfriend of three years, Ruth.
After the summer is when the trouble is set to start. Ruth is fixed for a job in Edinburgh for the next three years, but my long-term plans consist of "bum around for a year, then look to be assimilated into some faceless corporate machine"! Hopefully I'll be able to find a job here in Edinburgh and move in with Ruth, but otherwise I may end up back with my parents in Dumfries, which certainly isn't ideal - not that I don't get on with my parents, it's just that Dumfries is a little ... small.
In the meantime, I intend to try to squeeze a bit of writing in between the fitness work and (paradoxically) drinking. One long-term aim I do have is to write for a living. The problems are what and when. I have always assumed that the best way to write a book is by holding down a "proper" job at the same time, and I'm not sure that journalism really appeals to me. Hopefully keeping my hand in on this site will help me focus on what my aims really are, and if somebody (if anyone's read this far anyway; maybe I need to think about making my prose more concise; oops, off again!) gets enjoyment out of reading my stuff, so much the better.
G.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
