this reminded me of the famous War of the Worlds radio clip when people didnt realise it wasn't true and went mental with panic. Whatever preperation the world has, peoples reaction would be chaotic and cause much devastation and destruction as an alien attack 
Looting, murder, anarchy etc. No amount of planning can cope with that.

Are aliens the same scale as humans? They could be really really big, in which case we'd be screwed. But then they could be really really small, and have already invaded in viral form ... SARS, HIV, etc.

The question is:
Does anybody out there even want to invade Earth?
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that we (human race) have been quarantined.
Only the Reticulans see fit to break the quarantine...kind of like a certain pestiferous
breed of Earthling tourist...
IMHO, nobody needs to stage a military operation. There are more subtle means....
