A573572 - Cultural Ramblings

Post 1

Chairman Mei

I know these ramble and rant but I was wondering if there's any room here at the Guide for a lighter look at life through alien eyes... I've had no readers (or no replies to be more accurate) and was wondering if you people would be interested in a smile or two, ok, I'd be happy with just the one.

I think these are lovely, lively, interesting and funny BUT (sorry about this) I don't see any way of them being included in the edited guide: they'd have to be changed so much to fit in the guidelines that they'd be ruined. However, I'm posting here to keep you near the top of the list and see if a scout or Ace comes along with hope. smiley - star

Yeah, was a long way from Tipperary...

Wandrin'Star already said it.. personal opinion etc. is against the Guidelines for Edited entries. Maybe you check the AGGH 'project' at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A506675 ? It's a first start to collect 'philosophical' entries & things on the border between reality and fiction smiley - smiley

The H2G2 Post is also always on the look-out for interesting things to read. The current issue is always at to be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/ThePost, and this week's edition features a personal ranting from some Scout by the name of Bossel smiley - winkeye

But, Mr. Chairman, you seem to be quite familiar with Germany! Did you ever have a look at the GerManiaConnection (at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A448328 ) or Bolle's Berliner Bulettenbude at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A292448 ?

Mr. Cogito

I should also pipe in and mention that although Edited Guide are fine and dandy, there's tons of great stuff that's unfortunately not really appropriate for the Guide per se (like poetry, fiction, essays aren't found in encylopedias). So, it doesn't need to be included into the Edited Guide to be judge worthwhile. The other neat thing about the Guide is that entries can serve several purposes. Yes, they can be informative articles, but you can also create another entry to host a little community, link to related articles, etc. This would be the perfect way to put your stuff up. Create a society, tell a few things about what you want to do, and link to these articles (perhaps even encourage people to try their own). It's a lot more interesting than a stuffy encyclopedia. Go for it! smiley - smiley

This Conversation has been moved to the new 'Alternative Writing Workshop' as it doesn't necessarily fit the guidelines for the Edited Guide at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Writing-Guidelines (and Peer Review and the Writing Workshop are now only for discussion of entries that are being put up for the Edited Guide).

a shame, i feel, to be so stuffy. h2g2 should keep at least some of the fun and apocrypha of the original. Ho hum.

it does! The AWW *is* the collection of pieces of this kind, although I'm not happy with the designation 'workshop'!

Yes, I agree that you tend to ramble (well, *you* said it! smiley - biggrin). Very entertainingly, though, at times. I for one smiled much more than once and laughed out loud a few times (often at the asides and wordplays, although I thought the whole 'stoopit' section in LV was great!). Forgive the qualification ('at times'), but sometimes, especially in the Postcard piece, this is more like a journal entry than anything else. This is not to say that much of it could not appeal to a general readership. The style is there. Just that it is not a 'guide' to anything.

In fact, the 'Postcard' piece really is a journal, isn't it? There's even the date in there a few times. I say again that I've nothing against this as such but I do have a general gripe with this one. It just seems *too* long to me. IMHO, you have ideas for at least 3 separate pieces in there.

The Las Vegas piece is the one which seems closer to 'official' guide material, though it too would have to be fairly radically edited, I fear. If you wanted to, I'm sure you could work it in there. Personally, I enjoyed it in its current state, though. I've visited LV myself and it is a pretty amazing place. Unique, I think, is a safe description. After this I'm off to see if there is an edited entry on 'The Fields'! smiley - smiley If not, fancy collaborating? We could take a side of the Strip each. Bags I get Excalibur! smiley - laugh

There is a serious typo problem in the 'viewpoint' one (the one with the spitting section!). Something terrible has happened to all your apostrophes (at least that's the way it looks from here!). Makes it pretty tough on the eyes! smiley - online2long

Anyway, Veni, lexi, risi, Thanks smiley - ok

Is this person still in the building?

I think there is something here.

But it needs to be a bit more bite-sized.

Mr Chairman... ?

Mr Chairman... ? *wonders what the Chinese for 'comrade' sounds like*

Hmmmm, the Cultural Revolution looks to have lost a little of its impetus!

Trouble is, Chairman Mei isn't someone who has 'left behind' any stuff that is remotely adaptable by anyone else. As he said, it's all personal stuff.

I think it would be a shame because he/she has some funny stuff and *definitely* a different and thoughtful outlook. I hoped they might do a piece from sratch.

*go on then, one last try. 1, 2, 3... "Miiiissteeeeerrrrr Chaaaaaiiiiirrrrr-maaaaaaaaan!

As the Chinese say: "Frattely will get you evelywhere!" OK, so a cheap joke but I am seriously overwhelmed. Have to admit I had given up on H2G2 as I have enough disapproval to deal with living here as what is disparagingly called an "ausgeflipt Brit" (the Germish equivalent of "Wacky" or "Mad", two handles I hate). But what a start to my New Year!

I'd love to start writing with someone!!!! Always a loner but desperate for approval!

And, should have been "Firstly" but got carried away, sorry for not being here recently but as with above para, I'm not too good with only criticism, yes, I admit it, I was sulking!

So, anychance of contact outside of this site? I don't get much chance to go on the net much (rather liked the 2 much's in that sentence). Haven't been writing since thought no outlet for it but you could have a butchers at [URL removed by moderator] for a couple of tongue in cheek smiles in the meanwhile (also direct contact there too!).

Sorry again (I'm good at apologising, had a lot of practice at it) and thanks for your positivism (?).
