Hi,
I'm new here smiley - smiley and have just put up my first entry... could I please have any comments? Also, I have some diagrams to go with here, but am unsure as to the best way to link to them. Could someone please advise?

Thanks very much.

Diagrams... this is a somewhat complicated issue. We cannot upload our own graphics here smiley - sadface . From within an entry you can link to external places with the GuideML tag:

text_to_show_up
However, I'm not sure whether the BBC would allow you to link to your own web site smiley - erm This could be a question to raise at the
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/moderation-helpdesk - or you just try and wait if your page gets 'hidden, pending moderation' or something like that. A broken link or an unsuitable one (in the eyes of the BBC, mind you) is then the first thing to look at.

If you find something to link to within h2g2
text_to_show_up

When reading the intro I was afraid this entry would be talking about anything else but semiconductors... but then it changed for the better smiley - smiley
I'd suggest you rewrite the intro, perhaps telling us that all the new computers, mobile phones and MP3 players etc. each contain *millions* of them, a modern washing machine with Fuzzy Logic has thousands of them, and so forth.

The description of semiconductors and P/N junctions is excellent smiley - ok, and I'd like to see the entry continuing in that style. Not necessarily into crystal geometry and e-functions smiley - yikes, just a bit more of it, and please point out the relevance for our new household items. Eg, that PN junctions are *diodes* which are available as such, for people who are soldering together their own circuits. Bricks are the basic elements for building houses, and the FET transistor is the basic switching element for any logic-wizardry because every decision (input A *and*/*or* input B active -> output C is active) can be done by appropriately connecting FETs together. Something along these lines.

The bipolar transistor would deserve a para of its own, plus the analogue amplification which can be performed with either type, eg in the final stage of one's home stereo equipment or in the first stage of receivers of any kind.

It's a very good idea to have chosen this topic, as semiconductors aren't covered in the Guide, yet are hidden everywhere around us. Plus, there's a larger project (about Radar) under construction which needs to cross-link to a Semiconductor entry smiley - smiley

Summing up, this is definitely Guide bound smiley - ok, just needs something more to it smiley - winkeye

Oh, and here's a clickable link to the entry (just copy and paste from the navigation bar, h2g2 magic will convert it into a link when posted into conversations)

Thanks for the information smiley - smiley.

On the diagrams front, I seem to recall it's OK if it opens in another window, I think... I'll have a look around. Since I've got plenty of personal web space left, I'll pop some diagrams on there and link to them.

I'm definitely going to re-do bits of it, for clarity's sake if nothing else. I shall have to revise bipolar transistors smiley - smiley (I did the "seed" of this for an A level physics project) and, as you pointed out, a little more relevance would possibly be a good thing.

Thanks very much for the feedback smiley - smiley

Hey smiley - smiley how do you expect people to realise that you updated the entry if you don't post back here? smiley - winkeye

Eeeek! Sorry... forgot all about it... was going to post back when I'd done the thing on bipolar transistors smiley - smiley. But it's getting there... what do you think of the diodes section?

oops, pressed 'Post' too quick.

I wanted to add that no matter who issues suggestions here (Scouts or whoever), it is *your* entry and *you* will earn the glory of it. I'm saying this just for when you're ready to send it off to Peer Review, and I'm anticipating some bright sparks who'll ask you to give the full taxonomy of diodes with umpty members... just add to your entry what *you* want to, and say 'no, thanks' if you don't smiley - smiley

Well, I'm trying to keep it "A Beginner's guide", so I'm not going to go into great detail about anything much. I am, however, still working on a bit about bipolar transistors smiley - smiley.

Thanks for the advice... I don't actually know incredibly much, so I'll keep it simple smiley - smiley.

Hi cheesestraws,

I copied the article to A687143 (PR thread F48874?thread=167150). I'm happy if you want to finish the article yourself, or I'm also happy to continue editing it myself?

Hi:

It really depends how much is to be done. I'm quite happy to have a go if people give me an idea of what needs to be added, but (alas) I can see A Levels rapidly approaching and I suppose doing _some_ work would be a bright idea. Um.

Thanks,

cheese

There have been quite a few points raised on the threads, but I haven't had much chance to address any of them, and what with encroaching GCSEs, I don't really have a lot of article writing time either.
