Q: What's the thing I'd really love to have if only someone had the sense to make one?
A: I need a stretcher of some kind: something to sort out the problems of walking upright.
Here's how I think it might happen for future martyrs to back pain…
PS Yes, I know it's silly and if they did mess around like this it would all go horribly wrong

Definitely. It would definitely go horribly wrong...
But imagining it is lots of fun.
As a person whose feet are, in fact, prehensile (and who has TMJ, therefore back pain, and leg pain, and jaw pain, and...) I think this excursion into retro-evolution is just plain a idea.

Cheers Dmitri and Bel
That TMJ sounds awful. Poor you Can you hang upside-down by your tootsies then?
Yes, I have seen Waterworld - and Tarzan of the Apes

Oh, right, I didn't think of Tarzan. It was the mention of gills which reminded me of the film. Kevin Costner with gills and webbed feet.

This definitely sounds like an improvement! .
You've done a good job of imagining the society where this becomes possible. I can visualise the teenagers fleeing from the narrator swinging down stairs, and the fashionable young girl wearing her tail like a stole.
I think I might go for flippers myself!

I can actually write with my feet - I just can't see far enough to proofread.
Improving on nature sounds like fun - and it's good sci-fi.

If anyone can identify an animal that has perfect hips, I'll take one. Or perhaps just having bits of any animal that doesn't sit hunched over desk for 8+ hours a day would do it...
Nicely done, Tibley!

Thanks mVpoet and Danny I think you're right. Desk jobs
You can write with your feet dmitri That must require a very flexible foot. Did you have to practise much? I was ever so impressed by a friend of mine who could write with both hands. She said she'd taught herself so that she could get her lines (eg you will stay behind after school and write 100 times: "I must not [break this or that rule]") written more quickly. I don't know how she managed to write with both hands at the same time though.
I'd try sci-fi more often if I knew more about science. When I do try to write it, I always feel that I'm pushing my luck. It's very nice to know you think it works as sci-fi.
