Your planning more Royal entries then? Are there any entries on the current British royals that you didn't write? smiley - winkeye

Would that be the land she owns, or the land she has control of while she's Queen? I don't understand which you'd like. I do know the stuff she has control of, she's not allowed to sell etc., so it's a bit pointless putting that in.

Whatever you think more appropriate really - just thought it would be worth outlining some the assets of one of the world's richest people (even if this is only because the taxpayers 'gave' it to the royals a while back).

Has anybody seen Thomas Bernhard's play "Elizabeth II"?

It goes like this. Some 80 people waving union jacks crowd
onto a high balcony opposite the Vienna State Opera to watch
her majesty go by. The balcony collapses and they all get killed.

It's actually very funny. I've seen it twice.

I'm sure QE2 would appreciate the dry humour of it.
They should put it on in London.

Thanks, BigAl - that link helps.

The Invisible Knight is correct in everything he says - as far as he goes. The form of the salute (raising the hand to the side of the head) does date back to showing no weapon, raising the visor, etc. But that would imply that everyone in the forces would salute everyone else, which isn't what happens. When a non-commissioned serviceman (sailer, soldier or airman) salutes an officer, what s/he is actually saluting is the Queen's Commission held by that officer - hence essentially saluting HMTQ. Then the officer returns the salute in acknowledgement of the respect which has been paid to the Queen's Commission - so effectively returning the salute on behalf of HMTQ.

So I don't disagree with TIK, it's just that what he was told didn't quite complete the story.

smiley - erm I can't help thinking that this is a smiley - bleep of a lot of information to put in an Entry about the monarch. I think you could almost do a separate Entry on 'Saluting' smiley - 2cents.

Wonders who/what the military would salute if we ever lose our monarchy; and what the justification would be for saluting that person/artifact that we don't salute now?

I have to say that I agree with BigAl. I think it was fine as it was before.
"When one member of the forces salutes another, he isn't saluting that person, he's saluting the Queen, by proxy, and the person returns the salute on behalf of the Queen."

You could perhaps change it to:
"When one member of the forces salutes another, he isn't saluting that person, he's saluting the Queen's Commission held by that person, and the person returns the salute to acknowledge this on behalf of the Queen."
But I think that's a bit too confusing for those who won't know what the 'Queen's Commission' means.

All formal armed forces round the world (by which I mean properly constituted ones, not, for example, rebel armies) have officers who hold a commission. That commission is granted by someone in a position of authority, either directly or indirectly. For example, in the UK, the commission is granted directly by the monarch. In the USA, the commission is granted on behalf of the President. I believe that when a US officer is saluted, it's the President who is being saluted, by proxy, although it may be a salute to the Constitution of the US.

I've put it in a separate header after "Duties and Responsibilities" - I really would like to leave it in, because I didn't know any of that, and it seems others are confused/mistaken - and it's a nice bit of history.

if we didn't have a queen?
we'd swear to who was defender of the faith and ruler of the country.
they are very old swears.
i still have my oath of alliagance. kept it as a keep sake.

the being sworn in thing can be fun if you fancy mucking about.

especially the "I, state your name bit" I had to resist the urge. mind you, when i took the oath i had my fingers crossed on my left hand behind my back smiley - winkeye.

I see in today's paper that the Queen's eldest is toying with the idea of eventually becoming yet another King George since the title King Charles might be 'unlucky'.
