when did you leave ISOY? and you own your own co. tres impressive!! i am still a loyal slave of the great consultancy god, with no hopes of ever striking it out on my own. too chicken actually.

i remember stefan. do you remember the van der jagt clan? and red headed lloyd, whose father laila and i decided was the local cia rep? cameroon of course being the hotbed of politics and espionage that it was.

which year did you come to ISOY? its so weird, cannot remember us ever having a conversation in school and here we are decades later speaking to each other!

there was a whole van der jagt clan in school, across abt 4 grades, corjan, anne peter and a few more. AP was in my class. there was also a dondero clan, but none in my class. they were mormons with hazaar kids. then there were the "phi's" - remember them. phi hong was in our class.

i remember mrs dobson in 4th grade. met her again when i went back, and mrs franklin in 2nd, she was the best by far. mrs grace kaba. mr werner was our principal. remember when one halloween he came dressed in banana leaves and then had to take a week off afterwards cos he got those jigga worms in him? the librarian was mrs handleman i think, she used to let me take hazaar books out at a time. i liked joy schiller. didn't know she was texan...but i do remember her yellow beetle and the bearded guy she was living with.

as for your texan drawl, imagine my state when i went back to india after 10 years in africa with an american accent!! got shredded by the kids in school. quickly dropped the nasal twang and picked up the good old 'massacre every consonant' accent.

I went to ISOY during the 1984-85 academic year. I was in the 10th grade then, the highest at that time. I remember the Van der Jagts. Corjan was in the same grade with me. He taught me the Dutch word "scheit".

I also remember Mrs. Dobson, since she taught swimming as one of the weekly "flip-flop" classes. She also taught synchronized swimming as an optional Wednesday afternoon class, but boys were not welcome to attend as our bodies were not structured for that kind of activity. I also heard that during a teacher's meeting about an upcoming school holiday party, she spoke out against showing the movie Splash, since it had a mermaid in it, so instead, we watched Romancing the Stone.

The Mr. Werner banana leaf incident happened the year before I arrived, so that would have been Halloween of 1983. Dr. Werner was an interesting man. During school hours, he would walk over to the American Club and swim laps. Then after school as people were arriving to pick up their children he would stand in front of the school wearing a towel and holding a clipboard. I never found out what he was doing there, nor what was on the clipboard or even if he had anything on under the towel.

My name is Kinsey, in case anyone remembers me. smiley - smiley

you actually moved to cameroon after the coup d'etat that caused most people to flee?

mrs dobson was one of those born again types and hence the objection to mermaids i suppose...she told us that she didn't believe in the theory of evolution since the bible states that god made the earth in 7 days not a billion years. but she was nice.

i remember before mr werner, we had mr lambert and he was bearded and tall and very sincere. not a great achievement, but he knew all of us by name.

seems like aeons ago now. really another lifetime.

Yes, we moved there right after the attempted coup. Actually we were supposed to go there the year before, but everything got postponed at the very last minute. So I came very close to actually being there when it took place.

Also, less than a month before we were to go (in 1987) there was that incident in the Douala Airport where an arriving international flight from europe caught fire and the crew, rather than helping to evacuate everyone, abandoned the plane and left the passengers to fend for themselves. So the passengers opened the emergency exit and had to jump all the way to the ground, resulting in lots of broken legs. For months after that, every time I saw a white person on crutches, I knew they had been on that plane. Mr. Werner's wife had been on that plane. Anyway, my parents still decided to go, and everything was okay. (Although there were guards in the airport beating people back with billy clubs when we got there.)

I never met Mr. Lambert, but I heard he was a much nicer person than Mr. Werner.
