I'm new with grasses. Do you sometimes add a bit to the hole before the root-clumps? A bit of meal, fertilizer, peat, anything like that to give them a head-start?

Yes, just some compost to fill in the hole. Its smoother and fills in without leaving air pockets which can cause a plant to die. Then just firm down like this. 'demonstrates firming in round the plant with my hands' After that just some water.

So, trying to be realistic, how soon might you dig into your own gardens? Another month or more?

As soon as i can. I want to make a start before the weather warms up and the ground dries out. Of course it also depends on how arthur is behaving too.

Even with the recent spate of mild weather, the frost won't be out of our soil until atleast early April. Sometimes as late as the last of May.

There are already lots of bulbs shooting up, so is the lawn aswell Usually March is the time the gardening season starts, i think it may be early this year though.
