Sorry. 10 vertical stones with 5 cap stones, to make 5 trilithons (three-stone groups with two vertical stones and a single cap stone each).

I am trying to update this (using Gnomon's notesthanks Gnomon) and it's proving impossible due to RL - building work going on - having to make and lunch etc. It might be best if I withdraw this and update it - get it up to scratch - it needs a lot of work, then re-submit.
I'll post a link to this thread when I resubmit.
Thanks everyone.

Why is it that archeologists are always amazed about what folks managed to achieve a few thousand years ago? Do they believe the planet was populated by thick people?
And why does there nearly always have to be a religious reason for everything.
Marking astronomical details is understandable if you have ever seen the sky at high altitude on a moonless night in an unpolluted atmosphere. It is staggering. The light from the stars is bright enough to cast shadows!
The truth is that there were guys around in those days that had high IQs and could work out how to do difficult stuff with the technology available at the time.
I see no problem in moving 3 or 4 ton pillars from Pembrokeshire to Wiltshire. It's simple to do and could be achieved in a reasonable amount of time. There may be no evidence indicating the method used, but then the job was a "one-off".
If ancient civilisations were clued up enough to build a calendar, then they surely would have come up with a better solution to moving big stones about other than by dragging them or floating them on a raft.
So instead of concentrating on WHY, let's have some NEW ideas on HOW they managed it.
The solution I have thought of is simple and would have worked for the pyramid builders too!
Three for the best solution.
P.S. There is the possibility that the inner circle of stones supported the timbers for the roof of a large round house.
