Hi AW,
Can you put some headings into the first bit? I thnk it would look better that way and would also help you restructure a bit - with an intro and then headings describing different aspects of the evening .
Also when you say free state school, could you say 'free' state school? Strictly speaking, they are not free... we pay for them with our taxes. Not a big deal but just for accuracy
I have just had parent teacher evening for my kids. One is in primary and the other is in secondary. Parent evenings are very different experiences in each case. The secondary meeting was exactly as you describe and (quite frankly) a waste of time.. the primary one was like your freeflow evening but we each had ten minutes by appointment with the teacher... Can you differentiate them, or just say that you mean secondary in your entry, for example?
I like what you did with the advice section

Ignore that post, AW, I am having trouble getting on site to read and the posting is a nightmare right now. Will come back when the servers calm down a bit.

I've put in a footnote saying i.e. paid for by taxes next to the free state school bit. Sorry to hear about your server trouble.

Hi AW,
Sorry about that post - combination of wonky servers adn bad short term memory
I think your intro needs a tad more work - I like how the rest ahs come together though - good work.
It isn't always the kids bringing the parents in, by the way. Oftentimes, the children are not allowed to come.. so perhaps take that bit out of your first sentence and just say it is when the parents come in to see the teachers?
It may also help to have a header for Fraught Evening and then subheaders for teachers, parents and students. I suggest this as a way to break up that first chunk of writing. The content is great, it is just all in one big block whereas further down, it is easier to read with the headings you have put in.
See what you think.

You seem to be pretty inconsistant on whether this is a parent's evening or parents evening. I like this entry a lot! [I'm a sixthformer who has experienced all 3 types, and my mum teaches at primary school, so I know how mifffed that makes her...]
Isn't there a Janet + Alan Alberg poem on Parents evenings?
We're sitting in the corridor, my dad my mum and me....

As a teacher who hastaught in both the State and the Independent sectors, I can say that your assessment of the difference is quite accurate.
I'm now in the State sector. Had to attend a Year 10 P.E. last week. A girl booked an appt right at the last minute, so I didn't have much time to plan what I wished to say. Bottom line s that this girl (together with another) is frequently as much as 15 minutes late o a 50 minute lesson, tinking f cigarette smoke. She then doesn't confor to the 'start of esson routine' of "coats off, start the fairly simple written task that's on the board etc etc."
One day she was eating crsps and other comestibles in class and continued after I tol her to put them away, and informed her that this kind f thing was a major factor in th epidemic of childhood obesity.
Her Mum hadthe gfall to tell me that her daughter would continue to behave like this as she wouldn't respect me until I respected her. I asked what she meantndshe said that I had called her daughter obese. Aso, start of lesson routnes were irrelevant compared to the work done i the lesson; whereupo i informed her that her daughter acually attempted nothing. She also akes it impossible to teach those who want to learn by means of making irritating noises when my back is turned. Trouble is, I can't catch er doing it. On one occasion I had one Teaching Assistant and two technicians in the lab for a good part of the lesson and none could identify who was making the noises.
A colleague was telling me recently that he had overheard a parent (who also happened to be a teacher!!!!) boasting to someone that he deliberately booked his appointments late in the evening and then failed to turn up . Personally I think P.E.'s should be banned
