Phenolphthalein has 2 "OH" groups (see above site). In basic solution, the proton (H+) from each of these groups are removed, making the phenolphthalein 2- ion. This ion is pink colored, while the neutral moleule is not. So:
phenophthalein + 2 OH(-) --> phenolphthalein(2-) + 2 H2O
