A Conversation for How do I...?
.....Understand men??
Alison (ACE) Posted May 31, 2003
Oooh look, now I've gone and caused an argument through NOT posting!! Lol, just kidding (having read the backlog, I'm a little bit scared of you guys!) Well in that case, I will post what I think.
Firstly, as to who treats who better: I can only share my personal experiences which are not exactly vast. I've only ever had 3 boyfriends so I'm the first to admit that I can't exactly generalise this to everything male, but I've only ever had good experiences. I've never been treated badly by a guy.
However, I am of course aware that there are some guys out there who do treat girls badly. They don't phone when they say they will, they act hot and cold, they blow you off when they're in front of their mates etc etc. But in their defence, perhaps /some/ of them are doing it for a reason. Maybe they like you so much they're scared to talk to you or they're trying to impress you (whether it's working or not!) or something? I know it sounds strange but it could be true sometimes. Of course, there are some guys who are just b*stards, plain and simple. I have no explanation for them.
Also, although I've never been treated badly, I know some people who have, and it's not nice. I also know some girls who don't treat blokes nicely, so there you go.
As to who cheats more - I wouldn't know about the statistics. But we all know it's true that some men cheat and some women cheat, so you can't blame men for it when plenty of women do it too and vice versa. I think it's more of an individual person thing with that than a gender thing.
Basically I think I seem to have concluded what someone else did in a previous post - everyone's different. So to say "I can't understand guys" would of course be true cos there are literally billions of them out there who are all different. I think you're trying to understand the stereotypical guy - who doesn't call etc etc - but I think the trick is just to find one you can understand and stick with him
Anyway, don't know whether that answered the question, or whether you can even make sense of my ramblings (!) but there you have it.

Oh okay then. So are you any closer to understanding men than you were before then? Or are you just as bewildered?!

Surely it's impossible to understand an entire gender en masse? With so many motives, desires and competitive instincts driving people on the task is mind boggling.
Isn't it better to try to understand the person you are with or want to be with....what they want from a relationship, from life, what drives them, motivates them, excites them and p***es them off!!
From this platform comes mutual trust and respect.
Course might not stop them from running off with your best mate...the bitch!!!!!

hi !
i think there is one really important thing about men.
There is one thing that is more important to us than everything else, and that is our independence. I think men would nearly do everything to keep their independence. And well...relationships with women are in a way somewhat sacrifising some of this independce ( i am not saying that this isn't worth a relationship). But it's somewhat hard.
well, hope i could be a help

See that is what men dont understand about us women, you all think that we want to take your independence away, trust me, we DONT, i dont want to give my independence up, im a very independent woman, and it scares the living hell out of me having to give that up!

how is it, that if they tell you to be honest, you tell them exactly how u feel, and then they start saying that U r wrong and that u are actually feeling something completely different?

I have the exact same problems with my relationship....sometimes it is a copout and sometimes they are genuinely confused as to what they feel...it drives me crazy every day several times a day...I read Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus a lot.

It may be late in this thread to bring it up but here goes anyway. About 8 years ago, there was a stand-up comic named Rob Becker (I think) who did this show called "Defense of the Caveman". Now, I know his schtick was all for laughs, and all, but I think he came closest to describing the characteristics of men and women as any public forum has done, as well as a humorous but possibly correct explanation of the sources. Basically, his thesis was that men are hunters and women are gatherers. Everything follows from there.
Just one example: a couple goes to the department store or mall. The woman is energized; the man is exhausted just walking in the door. "What are we here for?", he asks. "Shopping", she replies. Now, let her tell him to go find a pair of socks, a chain saw, even soap (assuming he can recognize it), and he's off like a flash. Gone is the lethargy. He'll hunt it down, kill it, and bring it back.
