A *smoking* issue!!
Br Robyn Hoode - Navo - complete with theme tune Posted Jul 3, 2007
sorry, cant access external sites at the moment, I'll try and look another time.
However, I dont see that smoking is anything other than personally fulfilling. Therefore even starting to compare the effects of different kinds of pollution is already only looking at a fraction of the issue.

Sorry, better qualify that.
Not all transport is practical. The amount of SUVs, 4x4s and Challenger II tanks doing the school run must contribute one hell of a lot of pollution into the atmosphere. And that's near schools. Any kids that walk (like I used to) get treated to a few lungfuls of Carbon Monoxide.
Anyway, I do realise that this position I seem to have adopted is fairly untenable. And seeing as I don't even smoke, I may as well concede the point.
Touche!

If we're talking environment, then it's worth pointing out that cigarette manufacture (cradle to grave) isn't exactly benign. I'm thinking pesticide use for a start. Plus the paper bleaching, and the production of chemicals put into the tobacco to keep it burning (tailor mades).

Ome on where's your fighting spirit 603?
SWL wouldnt give up that easily. He would have poniited out that the large storage space ni the back of that hummer was ideal for holding all the cash you'd ned to pay to put half a tank of petrol in it. That it had versatile chromed *anyway 'round* wing mirrors and an easy to spot in remote break downs bright orange paint job. It has tinted windows to prtect you from the glare coming of all the chrome on the bonnet and alloy wheels so that anyone who wasnt quite sure was made aware that your vehicle was ostentaiously expensive and willfilly blingariffic. The more I think about it the more I come to realise that Ive never seen a more user friendly and useful vehicle.

Oi
1) I've now done 26000 miles in a 4x4 and I think they're shit. Thirsty, awkward and uncomfortable. Impractical and nonsensical.
2) Hybrids are no more economical than a diesel. 50,000 miles in one returned an average of 43mpg. 38,000 miles in a 2l diesel returned 44 mpg. Plus the manufacture and disposal is more environmentally damaging.
The answer to smoking is to return to chewin' baccy - just spit in the eye of a passing liberal
For transport, a return to horses but with large corks up their backsides to cut greenhouse gases.
Oh and well done Blicky, even managed to get slavery into a smoking discussion

4x4 isn't a type of car, it simply means that the car is driven by four wheels instead of two. It says nothing about fuel consumption, practicality, comfort or drivability.

Nirvanite Posted Jul 3, 2007
but as a colloquialism 4x4 means any land rover, range rover, or jeep esque vehicle, usually associated with being stupidly big for driving anywhere that isnt a farm, or the scottih highlands, and drinks petrol like George Best drank Scotch.

Yes, and it's an idiocy because it is so inaccurate. I have no idea what vehicle SWL was driving.

Nirvanite Posted Jul 3, 2007
Admittedly, it could have been an Audi Quattro, but as i said above, 4x4 is widely used to refer to those hulking monsters parents seem to favour for the already congested school run.
A *smoking* issue!!
It could have been a subaru car too. Or a toyota ute or RAV, or a landrover, or an SUV. They're all different kinds of vehicles. Calling them a 4x4 doesn't tell us anything other than that they're 4WD.
