There is a rumour that the eccentric American newspaper editor James Gordon Bennett Junior was the inspiration for the expression, Frenchie, due to the capers he used to cut i.e. mad things he got up to. People would say Gordon Bennett? What's he done now? and things like that and it evolved from there. However, others think it could be a less blasphemous version of God and Saint Benedict, used to save offending the religious brigade.
