Entry: Turkish Delight - A830648 Author: Dr Montague Trout - U188966 This has spent a bit of time in WW. This is the thread: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F99150?thread=210588 If anyone knows Tarquin Hall, I'll be grateful if you can notify him that I have borrowed his comparison between Hadji Bekir and Willy Wonka. I can't take the glory for that.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Sep 20, 2002
Well, I've already given this one the whilst it was in the WW, and I'll see if I can recall anything else during the next seven days (after which I have no doubt that it will be picked ) from my time as a sugar boiler.
And well done on your Stilton entry making it to the front page today Dr T

This is quite jolly, Dr T!
Interestingly, they sell an identical product in Crete, however it definitely isn't know as Turkish Delight there! (cf Greek coffee!) I think it's sold as Greek Delight.

In the Pacific NW of the US of A is a turkish family that takes advantage of the abundant orchards there, and they make fruit flavored turkish delight. They call them Applets and Cotlets, but I have also seen them in pineapple and macadamia nut flavors. The candies are considered representative of the region, and not particularly turkish at all (even though they are).

Applets and Cotlets are turkish delight?!?!
I've probably eaten them while reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, without realizing that they were.

I, too, was surprised by this. While they are tasty, I just couldn't imagine them to correlate with anything tempting enough to subvert me. Since I identified with Edmund when I read the story as a child, it was one of my first self-realizations that I did assert real feelings to fictional characters.

Hi Dr M,
Good stuff,
I sincerely hope you get to keep "something of a contemporary Turkish Willy Wonka"
One li'l quibble: "it reportedly first debuted " - I guess you know what I'm gonna say, but i can't resist it...
When did it debut for the *second* time?
