Well, if you insist on reading every researchers boring h2g2 conversations, be my guest. It's not worthwhile time management, I must say.
Pick out ones with big, stand-out subject lines, or ones about subjects you can really contribute to.
I found that if I did this, I wouldn't get replies cos the conversation had already died. You gotta pick "happening" forums, which is what I see you are doing. Ok, stick with that.

I do indeed pick happening forums, as they only appear on the info page if they have been posted to in the last 24 hours. And jo, of course people can listen in on your h2g2 conversations.It says when you sign up that your journal and the forums aren't private. (neither is email for that matter, so be careful what you say there too. In fact, if you use a cordless phone it has the same problem, so be careful with those credit card details.
If you post to a forum where nothing happens for a while, it seems to linger on your conversation pages, but you may have to look quite a way back to see if any of them have been posted to. but that is fairlyqick to do, and you might restart a thread that had run out of steam, cos they had run out of differences.
