Pure Camp
Hypatia Posted Dec 13, 2012
I was reading movie reviews for something completely different and found one from someone who thinks "The Long, Hot Summer" with Paul Newman is pure camp. That wouldn't have occurred to me, but the guy makes sense. It capitalizes on every Southern cliche there is. I can't imagine it appealing to teens, however.
The Incredible Dr. Phibes is pretty awful and fun at the same time.

Hati, you've given me an idea. We need to have a foreign film festival sometime.

Speaking of which... Hobo With A Shotgun is not as good as it sounds.

Aw, come on...that manhole cover scene was a classic.

Reg Livermore's 'Betty Blokk Buster Follies' fills the bill in some respects, but I'm not sure your teenagers would appreciate it: http://www.reglivermore.com/regshows_betty.html

Just a thought.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Dec 14, 2012
I Was a Teenage Werewolf, or pretty much anything else produced by Sam Arkoff, like Beach Blanket Bingo. And how did Roger Corman get left out of this conversation The Raven! The Pit and the Pendulum!

Oh... I'll be a traitor to my 80's childhood if I don't recommend all the films of John Hughes, especially Breakfast Club, which takes place in a library!

One of my problems is that it has to also be 'suitable' for the library to show. Not suitable for a library in a large city where almost anything goes, suitable for Little DooDah. Two or three years ago, I've lost track, I showed a series of movies that had been banned or seriously challenged during Banned Books Week. I got a lot of flack over it from some of our fundies. Full support from my board, but it created a stink in some quarters in the community and we had people cancelling their cards. Of course, it was wildly applauded by many others, thank goodness.

Yeah, I was suspecting you needed something that was Mostly Harmless. Which is why I didn't recommend 'Earth Girls Are Easy'.

I was wishing very hard yesterday that my mom was on here*--we'd have b-movie marathons and I don't remember all the titles Also, I wasn't too sure about the definition of camp But The Raven (I'm assuming you mean the one with Vincent Price) is wonderful and I don't think would cause any problems. Unless magic is a big no-no. In which case The Magic Sword would be a problem, too.
*Which *didn't* morph into my sulking that she isn't here, period That I'm aware of. I'm pretty sure foul mood last night was tiredness and disappointment, since I'd read this thread in the morning, and I was fine most of the day.

Amy, it's sometimes hard to find anything -- book, movie, whatever -- that won't offend someone. Magic does bother some parents. We've had some people object to Disney animated films like Cinderella and Snow White. But truthfully, the greatest number of objections we get from parents of the pre-teen and teen age levels are books and films that portray problems like divorce, abuse, rape, drug and alcohol addiction, terminal illnesses, etc. Real life problems that un fortunately many kids experience. It's almost like these parents think if their kids don't read about something, it won't be real.

How about 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure'?
I KNOW teens like this movie. And it was first recommended to me by the wife of a Russian Orthodox priest.

That's a good recommendation, Dmitri. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective would go over well too. It's not my favorite, but it does have broad appeal and is fairly innocuous.

Yeah, thinking about it, with what you said, Hyp, The Raven probably should be saved for adults (or just yourself--I think you'd love it), at least at your library. Trying to not be too spoilery, someone has left someone else for someone more powerful, and the raven is quite the wine-bibber
But Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, the guy that I can't think of the name of with the googly eyes (not Marty Feldman--the one in old Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), a very young Jack Nicholson (may have been his first role)...
