The Researcher Formerly Known as Gosho here. I need some information from you regarding the whole LD thing.
I know little of Leisure District and Digiboxes other than they're not very useful for accessing the internet, and LD's not around any more. Was it a website or an ISP or some mix of the two like AOL? What could and couldn't you do on, and what are the limitations of the Digibox?
I want to learn more about them both because it's been suggested more than once that many ex-LDers have migrated here and their influence has changed h2g2, leading to the current discussion over at the Communiy Soapbox. Do you think h2g2 is the only place they've gone or just the most popular, and why?
Tell me whatcha know

don't panic... not all the LDers have landed on here...
the ones with PCs have set up their own site[s] somewhere on the web [i think one of them has been set up by aka as well...
]...
those on digibox can only access the BBC sites... including the DNA sites of course...
Ld was a site on telewest as part of the interactive package [hence the digibox]... tho' some people were accessing it also on the net...
the main part was the chat rooms but there was also a part called the library where we could quote and debate about anything [a bit like askh2g2 really]...
i went on chat for a while but then started quoting in the library and from then pratically didn't go on chat anymore...
there have been some LDers on here long before the closing down of the old site but they were not heard much as the digibox had difficulties accessing some convos...
when a few friends from the lD library and i arrived in august we discovered what we call the "360 trick" which helped a bit accessing long conversations through the digibox and so the LDers space was created...
the plain skin gives us more freedom tho'... interestingly enough we had problems accessing askh2g2 even with the 360 trick so any changes in Askh2g2 before the release of the plain skin can't be due to the Lders presence...
might have to wait tomorrow for the next instalment tho' as i'm going offline soon [ i was supposed to go offline hours ago actually...]...
i will post you a link to an informative entry on LD as well...
talk soon...

Thanks loup Personally I've noticed that the change has coincided more with the release of Salmon of Doubt and the massive influx of new Researchers it prompted, than the arrival of any LDers.
Looking forward to more info

...
just read emmily's reply about my observations being right...
it's incredible what the memory can keep considering that when i saw that at the time i didn't really think that it was something i had to make a note of...
anyway... definitely on my way out this time...
talk soon..

"...definitely on my way out this time"
You've got a classic case of h2g2signoffitis - it takes an hour from saying "I have to go now" to actually making your last post for the day

I know the feeling well
At least if you visit the cyber cafe it will give you an incentive to use that time constructively rather than not do anything.
Where as if you are home on digibox you tend to get the "I'll do it later" syndrome.
But whatever you do..............
Have fun

yep... tho' during my first times at the cybercaf i had a tendency to surf the net instead... but now i use my time more efficiently there...well, most of the times...
my main problem now is that since i have started using a computer to do things on here, i don't seem to have the patience to use the digibox anymore even for just adding a simple link on an entry...
unless it's an emergency of course...
talk soon...

I find it easier to use h2 with a digibox but I used the pc for all the other web sites but its packed at the mo ready for the move out of here
All we have to do now is wait, and its driving me nuts.

Loup Dargent Posted Apr 17, 2003
yeah the waiting can be a pain..
but at least it will be worth it at the end...
re: the use of computer... there are one or two projects that i could start through the digibox as it would not involve too many items to put on their pages but because i know it can be done quicker with a PC i just can't be bothered doing it with the machine... which is madness really as that would be a constructive use of my free time... i never used to think twice about it before... i was even able to type BBC links... now i just wait for when i've got PC access time...
oh well, as my cybercaf budget is almost spent and the local library is going to be closed during easter i might have to go back to the basics...
i'm on my way offline any minute now.... talk soon..

just read emmily's reply about my observations being right...
Hmmmmmmm I do like to check things out, even though I checked after I posted, and not before. And I'm 'big enough' to admit my errors, I'm well practiced at that, I make enough of them.
