A Conversation for The Phantom Menace

Well you have to admit the Solo/Jabba scene was better than the Forrest Gump/JFK scene. =)

Oh yeah, JFK's eyes didn't "boggle" once! I don't know about you, but I hope there's no musical numbers like the one in ROTJ:Special Edition!

I was not asking for deep introspectives into the people in the film. But many people were never introduced to the audience. I can understand not introducing, say, Yoda, but that means that people must see the movies in order of production instead of chrnologically. I was hoping that the people in the first movie were given more story behind them, instead of depending of the audiences knowledge of the people from the first films.

Well, I guess that's why they re-released the original three films so that everyone would know what was going on. Having not seen it yet (and having to wait another month) I can't really comment.

I rather enjoyed the musical number in ROTJ Special Edition. It reminded me of the necessity and importance of flossing.

Well, I must admit, the original scene with the puppet wasn't any better... I've heard that one of the characters in the new movie is very annoying!

The annoying character is probably Anakin. I can't help but think "Wesley Crusher."

No, I think they were refering to and I'm not sure if this is exactly the right name.. "Jar Jar Binks" I know what you mean about the Wesley Crusher factor though. it's a scary thought...

Oh no! Not Jar Jar! I went out to Target and bought a Jar Jar action figure! He's on top of my monitor right now! LOL! He's adorable!

He really is in the movie for comic effect, but is an annoying little bugger that keeps popping up. Too much screen time, not enough Maul.

Jar Jar vs Maul

Post 31

Zach Garland

Well that's where you and I differ obviously. I think Darth Maul is quite literally a necessary evil. There was someone before Vader and in this case someone with less fashion sense.

Saying there could be too much Jar Jar in Episode One would be like saying Lucas spent too much time with the cute little droids and jawas at the beginning of Episode Four.

MORE DARTH! you say. MORE SEVERED LIMBS AND EXPLODING STORM TROOPERS! I WANNA SEE VADER CHOKE SOMEBODY!

Personally, I'll take cute comic relief over senseless violence any day. Fortunately, the Star Wars series has enough of both to please almost any audience member, provided said audience member is tolerant also of whatever they find pointless and unecessary.

It wasn't until 'The Empire Strikes Back' that things became really nasty. The tone of the films changed. It was much darker than 'A New Hope'. Much has been made of the lighthearted feel of 'The Phantom Menace'. Let's not forget, this is a trilogy. It's been mooted that David Fincher ( 7even, Alien III ) may direct the next film.
That maybe indicates the direction the trilogy is taking.

I for one can't wait.
I'm 30 years old, about to become 12 again.

Maybe I'm wrong, and to tell you the truth - given my track record it wouldn't be any surprise at all, but I thought that Lucas was going to direct all three films? Although the first thing I read was that he's do the same as the original trilogy - direct the first and set the tone etc and get others to direct the other two. I'm sure that Lucus would remain in very tight control...

The monitor at home. At work my Jar Jar action figure would probably inadvertently "walk off of it's own accord." Besides, they frown on anyone showing tendencies toward indivduality around here. People USED to keep plants and figurines and various paraphernalia about their cubicles, but then it became something that middlemanagement frowned upon, and peer pressure did the rest.

Ah that's a bit of a pain! There's a couple of blokes in this office who have star wars figures, the lot... they often pop out during the lunch break and come back with new toys... these guys are in their 30's and have to be told to stop having light-sable fights and reenacting scenes from Star Wars! smiley - winkeye

In the last interview I read with Lucas he was intending to direct the next one himself.

Remember, the only reason he didn't direct Empire was that he nearly killed himself with exhaustion making Star Wars and didn't think he could take the strain. This time he's in complete control so he's under less strain.

That's kind of what I heard. He was going to do the same as he did in the first three, but had decided to remain in control for these... Now whether that's a good thing, or a bad thing depends on which of the three (four) films is your favorite I guess!
