No, Ed, if you remove someone they won't be notified. They may eventually notice you're removed them. One could theoretically just tell those people that for a variety of reasons, you've deleted your profile? Or something along those lines.
I've added just one person I wish I hadn't; she's a co-worker and a bit of a trial to work with and I thought ignoring her request might make her even more difficult. She's yet to write anything to me there...

I always find that weird when people like that try to get back in contact. You didn't get on with me well back then so why contact me now? Unless of course they thought they did get on well and had no clue as to how they actually came across. people are strange...

Recently I found one of my old high school friends, but at the same time one of my old classmates found me. I added him, though we weren't particularly friendly, because he's in a band that does local stuff and I thought I might support them. Also it seems that he's added everyone who ever went to the same high school so it's not like he'd be focused on me. But I'm amazed at all these people who've sent me requests since- people who not only weren't friendly with me but some of whom were outright awful. Why bother? Certainly after all these years I've no desire to kiss and make nice-nice with people I'd never even thought about since the day I received my diploma?

'xactly! I guess it is either ego building (look how many friends I have), a complete ignorance of how they behaved previously or just completeness.

Oooh, I think there was a discussion recently on Slate about former bullies who contact their old victims because they don't remember that they were bullies, or want to apologise.

I think the "look how many friends I have" bit is a fair assessment in general. I do know a handful of people who have many contacts, for example a couple of friends own or are employed by a local bar and record shop, and they've added most of their regular customers, which seems reasonable to me. But there are others who just add every single person they've ever met.
Me, I'll stick to people I actually talk to, and enjoy talking to. And I've added just a couple of K's family members so they can let me know in advance when they're planning get-togethers. Otherwise K and I don't find out till the day of or the day before, and we wind up missing a lot of them.
I'm a fairly antisocial wotsit myself, you see.

'Antisocial wotsits of the world, unite? Or at least consider forming a loose association of some sort...' As slogans go, it's a bit long, really.

Ivan, I'm complete with you concerning the definition of "facebook". Mine tends to get more painful since I started to wear reading glasses in bed
Guess I'm not that very social either, even though I've been interacting a lot with people the last couple of days. A high school friend showed up uninvited rather late yesterday evening so I had to make her some tea. This evening I had dinner with some colleagues due to one of them retires officially tomorrow.
I think I've been social enough for a long time now...

I second that proposal!
Let's all take a vote on whether her majesty the Dragonqueen needs to learn how to breathe fire to impress us antisocial wotsits next time we all meet:
I vote AYE

<mode> The trouble with spitting fire is that one (yes *one*) flame has the same effect on your lungs as smoking a whole packet of cigarettes. Hence my refusal to learn.</mode>
Of course, that probably doesn't apply to dragons.
( for PC - I know what you mean. I've persuaded myself that going to the may dance back in Wuppertal where I always went is too much trouble )
