Is this show pure genius or what? Granted, I almost had to like it on principle, being of the right gender, age and temperament, but it's even better than I'd hoped. I found myself spontaneously applauding the TV on Friday night over some of the brilliant things that were being said about mobile phones and my personal ultimate pet hate, automated telephone answering systems.
I particularly loved Will Self's comment on the over-use of mobiles - 'To paraphrase Winston Churchill: never has so much been said by so many about so little' - and Rick Wakeman's idea of impersonating an automated answering system if his bank rings him: 'To speak to me about my mortgage, press 1. To speak to me about my overdraft, press 2...'.
The only drawback is that the show implies that grumpiness is, or should be, confined to we males of a certain age. I firmly believe in a universal human right to be grumpy. Perhaps we should petition the BBC for follow-up series on 'Grumpy Old Women' and 'Grumpy Young Folks'?

Just watched it on video and while i use many of the objects of irritation mentioned, i found myself nodding in overwhelming agreement and ing along with it all!
Excellent program- it should be shown on large screened tv's on every street corner and every pub, every outhouse.. every...oh sorry, got a little carried away there
It was quite thought provoking actually- for example i never realised just how conditioned we are becoming to the utterly horrendous layout of the average street, and all the junk that adorns it- though i hated the nannying effect of these crossing barriers as soon as they appeared, and commend that bloke's attitude of climbing over them- i'll goddamn cross the road wherever i bleedin want to

I doubt somehow that this one will be shown on BBC America (was it a BBC show btw?). Americans are far too happy-dappy and smiley-miley for that sort of thing.
Yes, I know Grumpy Old Men was a film about two Americans

I really don't think you can call yourself 'old' yet Ormondroyd. Life has only just begun for you hasn't it?
The show sounds interesting. I don't think we've seen it on Australian screens yet. (I thought you meant the movie at first )

Yes, Gosho, it is indeed a BBC series. And a very fine one at that. Hope you get to see it somehow!
, Táralómë! I am a mere youth of 43, but I'm old enough to be included in the programme. Will Self is slightly younger than me (b. 1961). I just wish I was as slim and handsome as him! Ah well, must get to the gym today...

Fantastic. Culture seems to like it as well.
Actually, I don't like reading Culture, but since they changed PLAY to whatever it is now, which I hate even more than Culture, I have to .
Key: Complain about this post
