Su 1 Jun 2014, I stopped by Verizon wireless to find out why my old 73 GB HP notebook laptop would not accept the vzw 4G router, found I would need an adapter, a small plugin USB device available at Radio Shack

I also found they were offering a free iPod promotion and that's what I am using right now, about 8 GB with a Chrome operating system.

While it can't do everything a PC might do, its got a lot of features the PC hasn't got and is a useful and convenient supplement used together with the laptop.

Still working on upgrading software on the HP.

If you need software for an older laptop linux might be worth a try? I have Linux mint on all my pc's and they are all old the one i'm using to post this is my main desktop which is 12 years old and only has 526mb of ram. It is able to run the latest greatest linuxmint with full desktop environment no probs. (i am upgrading right now though too smiley - smiley )

Ditto, exactly what I'm attempting.

My greatest travail with Linux is connecting with the internet.

right! today i just upgraded my PC to one slightly newer (less than 10 years old) Linux installed in about ten minutes -- the fastest i have ever seen it go, maybe thats because this is a newer machine. The hardest part of the whole affair was putting the cable together and opening the case to put a new hard-drive in (it came without one).

Still prepping laptop for new OS installation, running security programs as preliminary to a tune up, repartitioning the hard disk, wiping hard space before actually installing the new OS.

I may need a few new software items to support that as well.

Tedious.

Then some serious writing.

Gparted found some missing software items when I attempted to repartition the hard disk and insists I must replace them before the program will make any changes in my system. smiley - biggrin

I knew the system was having trouble.

At least now I know what to look for.

Its almost bed time and time for me to get started on my night time meds, since I've a long run up to Loma Linda, CA tomorrow, about 100 miles one way, over arthritic problems, especially in my hands.

Still prepping for the OS swap and have at least one more software item to reinstall before I attempt gparted again.

The system is stabilizing and running smoother.

Eventually, though, I'm going to discard everything but the OS and an antivirus program, compact it into as small a partition as possible and simply maintain it as a fallback.

Got the laptop up to a serviceable level of performance yesterday, though still a lot to do with it.

If time allows, after a continuing documents search, my own this time, I'll be getting started on a writing stint tonight or tomorrow.

There are things that this tablet simply can't do in terms of writing tasks that the laptop does well at.

The laptop is operating pretty smoothly and swiftly now, though it still has an irritating tendency to crash unexpectedly, especially if an autorun starts on some program or other without a notification, taking me by surprise.

For that, I think, there is no remedy except a more powerful CPU, considering that the current one is original equipment with less than half a gigabyte of capacity.

One more essential download, half a dozen updates and it should be in condition to do some long belated serious writing.

Slow, with frequent interruptions, finally embarked on some serious writing.
