Reading 'The Lord of the Rings'
Random Mood Started conversation Mar 6, 2007
I was introduced to LOTR by the films and, having read 'The Hobbit', I have just started the LOTR trilogy while on holiday.
Anyone else reading it at the moment?

It must be over 10 years since I read it. I keep meaning to re-read it, but the ever-growing pile of books I've never read gets in the way...
Blooming brilliant books.

I rarely read books more than once, but The Lord of the Rings is one which I'll continually pick up and leaf through, reading certain passages and scenes. It's by the side of my bed at the moment.

I used to read it once a year but I haven't read it for about 3 or 4 years now. Trying not to re-read too much
but I find it difficult to resist these.

I've never managed LOTR. I was introduced to the Hobbit when I was 9 and hated it, and then I tried LOTR as well, and didn't get into it either.
I've since re-read the Hobbit and enjoyed it, but I still can't get into LOTR.

I read the Hobbit aged about 8 (stole it off my dad's bookshelf) and loved it, then started on LoTR and gave up. I have tried, every 5 years or so, but never managed to plough through all of it.

I read the books in Swedish translation, some 14-15 years ago. I've re-read them once since, I think.
Never did manage to get through Silmarillion though.

I could only get to grips with the Silmarillion on the 3rd or 4th read when I started just letting the stories wash over me. It was much better that way.
LOTR was my 'going away to boarding school' present, so I started it in September and read it twice in succession. Partly because I loved the story, but partly because it got me away from that awful place (if only in my head) it was my September companion for the rest of my school life.
Then I just got in the habit of re-reading it every other year or so (or every year)
The Children of Hurin was ok, but nothing spectacular. I have the most recent one sitting on my shelf, Gruesome #2 gave it to me for Christmas 2010 but I'm reluctant to read it - in case I don't like it...

Agapanthus Posted Jan 17, 2012
I'm glad I'm not the only person who re-reads LOTR every few years.
Sho - I took my copy to boarding-school and used it as an escape-from-jail-for-a-few-hours card too.

that's interesting to know - there were a few of us who had favourite books to stave off the homesickness.
(btw if anyone wants to know about my school it features in One Day at a Time by Susan Lewis who was there 8 or 9 years before me and it hadn't changed much )

I read LOTR a few times. Loved it. Love the hobbit, too, but haven't reread it more than once, I think.
I never went to a boarding school, but my parents were very strict, and we had to help with the housework a lot, so whenever I had a good book I hid on the attic and pretended not to hear my mum call me.
