The Woodlanders, By Thomas Hardy

Set in the ninteenth century contryside, this follows the fortunes of several characters over many years.

Giles is still in love with his childhood sweetheart Grace, who has returned from boarding school. However she is falls for the local doctor who is unfaithful to her. Meanwhile Marty admired Giles from afar.

Like many modern romances novels this concerns love found and lost, however unlike modern novels the characters are stuck with the people they have choosen when they relise that they had choosen the wrong person to marry.

Those newspapers readers who bemoan the decline of marriage as an insituition and the rise of divorce would do well to remember that to be stuck in aloveless marriage is as great a tradgdy as a family breaking down due to divorce.
