I have a friend who, upon being presented with an invoice from a solicitor who had verbaly agreed to waive the fee, presented the payment in 1 pence pieces all £240 worth!

Really? Which bank are you with?
My old bank were delighted when I turned up one morning with 200 quids worth of 20p coins as they had run out, and had been planning a delivery from the next town.

Halifax I won't let you I think, unless you're a chairty or a child, I didn't think other banks would either...

I do keep a High Street bank account open specifically to deal with loose change, as I've found it a little tricky to stuff all the 10p pieces down the phone line to my main internet based bank account

Yup my banks have always accepted stacks of pennys or other loose change, although you are often sent to the business window, perhaps you need to get your revenge on the people at halifax.
