Greenwich is another great London borough.
I particularly like the park, which has a massive hill in it, from the top of which you can see for miles around, a great view. There's also the observatory, which I haven't been to for ages, but which is pretty good.
Greenwich market is quite nice, you can buy fudge, crafts, and in the winter, hot spiced apple juice.

The observatory and planitarium at Greenwich is worth a visit (As Frankie says). It's so much better than The London Planitarium!
What's the name of that ship there? That's great to take kids (and adults) round.
And it's the home of World Time, the Prime Meridian, everything happens there first! (So much for Australia being first with 2000, it started at Greenwich!

The 'where does it happen first argument' is an old one, in some senses it's Greenwich, in some senses it's these small islands in the middle of nowhere... But Greenwich is certainly home to the meridian (GMT) - and has a big history.
There's a shop in Greenwich cheeckily called 'The First Shop in the World'!

Yeah, well it's all a bit arbitary anyway...
Back to the subject, what other nice things about Greenwich are there?
Greenwich
Mina Posted Apr 24, 2002
Hmm, can't remember much, I haven't been there for about 3/4 years.
the clock museum at the observatory is fantastic though.

Frankie Roberto Posted Apr 24, 2002
There's the Cutty Sark of course
I went to a fantastic exhibition on time at the Royal Mueseum (bottom of the hill from Observatory). It had info on things like time slowing down as you get older, and speeding up whilst you're taking cocaine...
Greenwich
Mina Posted Apr 24, 2002
Aha! That's the name of the ship I couldn't remember!
That does sound like an interesting exhibition. They do say that using cocaine is like borrowing from the future.

Mina Posted Apr 24, 2002
Me neither. Although sometimes I think I should be allowed to snort it for medicinal purposes.
Greenwich
Frankie Roberto Posted Apr 24, 2002
Medical purposes? Haven't heard that one...
It's a good excuse for marijuana though.
Greenwich
Mina Posted Apr 24, 2002
WEll, I'm sort of making it up. As cocaine eats away your nose lining, I thought it might eat away the polyps I keep getting, so saving me the trouble of having operations. (Excuse me for rambling off topic, I've just found out that I need another operation, Last one was in January. )
Greenwich
Frankie Roberto Posted Apr 24, 2002
Sounds nasty, even though I'm not sure what 'polyps' is...
Best wishes and lots of luck with the operation!

Back to the subject of Greenwich......I had an idea the Cutty Sark was closed or will be closed for refurbishment. The other great attraction of course is the market - I think its on Saturday and Sunday.
Greenwich
Frankie Roberto Posted Apr 25, 2002
I think it was open last time I went, but that was some time ago. The market's great, I agree. There's also some great shops in the market area, such as the games shop!

The Time exhibition was a few years ago now but was fascinating.
I was born in Greenwich and have been back to the park many times.
My best experiences there were a promenade performance of Pratchett's "Lords and Ladies" about 4 years ago, and the eclipse. It was like a big party and I wouldn't have been anywhere else.

When I was a kid we used to go to Greenwich park, and I'd run up the hill as fast as I could, knackering myself. Then run down again, almost killing myself by falling over. It's very steep.
Ah, memories.

Greenwich has loads going for it. As well as the excellent royal park, observatory, maritime museum, old royal naval college and cutty sark in Greenwich. Why not go out further in the borough and try the firepower museum in woolwich? you can cycle from one to the other passing the dome (shame about the inside but wow to the outside). Greenwich is full of great resturants as well.
