My pleasure. smiley - smiley

Just one thing - if these are all finished I'd like to get them asap because a) I'll have time between now and the New Year and b) I won't take on another subbing batch if I know these are coming up.

I was impressed with Bels' "Brunel" article, and his "Hijack" series shows a related interest, so as far as I'm concerned, if Bel feels he's "stupid enough", I couldn't agree more. He has my blessing. smiley - smiley

I *thought* you'd been too quiet lately BB...

Off writing 20-plus entries on the IoW eh?

Looks really interesting, can't wait until it goes live!

Though it's pretty odd that we've both working on huge uni projects at the same time. smiley - cheers

Great! I'll give Bels editing rights on all the entries. I haven't had to do this too many times, so if I miss one out, or get the names the wrong way round please bear with me. smiley - grovel

Thanks, Mina. That's 19 I've got so far, out of 21. Waiting for

I haven't checked names, only totals. I counted them out, and I'm counting them back in, to coin a phrase.

A little yarn about the American Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania...

...Right down to the generals' horses. smiley - winkeye

I'm actually thinking about writing an American Civil War article, strangely enough, but one one Hampton Roads.

Fascinating time in history here in the states eh?

I'm just interested in the development of the ironclad warship (hence my HMS Warrior article: A538030 ), and so Hampton Roads is a logical next step before going into the Italy/Austria conflicts, especially the Battle of Lissa, in July 1866. Although I may write one about the nautical aspects of the Crimean War first, or one specifically on the development of the Turret ship, ie an Ericson v Cowper Coles article.

Ah.

Saw a really interesting show on television about the USS Constitution - something about it being a 'super frigate'...

Good stuff - nautical warfare interests me, but being an old ground-pounder I stick with what I know best. smiley - winkeye

I've been onboard the USS "Ironsides" Constitution, quite a nice ship. I'd never heard her called a "super frigate" before, but yes, she is a large frigate. America did not build battleships as such, just large frigates, but then by the 1850s the difference between firepower of frigates (which were often still rated as 6th rate ships despite being far superior to 4th rate ships-of-the-line) and more conventional fleet ships is blurred. The development of frigates is something I'd like to find more about sometime.

I reckon 'super frigate' was an modern Americanism to try to explain her class. (We've got super-sized french fries and soft drinks after all! smiley - winkeye)

Apparently the Royal Navy often protested after-action reports suggesting that an American 'frigate' (of her class) defeated two British frigates since she was so much bigger than the typical Royal Navy frigate of the time...

Pretty interesting show.

Yes - the American frigates of the time were quite large, and the American navy did not fight fleet battles in the same way that the British, Dutch, Spanish and French did. It was, at the time, Royal Navy policy to keep all its First and Second rate ships in the two main fleets in the Channel and Mediterranean, to defend/blockade from the Spanish and French fleets there, and so only small ships were able to be spared for the other side of the Atlantic, especially with the threat of Old Boney.
Although in researching for my Hampton Roads article I'm finding out quite some interesting things about American warships before the 1860s...
