Ok, doing this in Pliny to see how we get on.

Hello? Hello? *taps glass, carefully avoiding the ironic use of angled brackets to denote smilies, or even any of yer axshuall smilies as they don't work in 'ere*

A journal a day through November.

In other skins, you can put something in angle brackets to indicate that it ought to be a smiley. In Pliny that just makes it disappear.

In Brunel you can click on the smiley buttons when you want to insert a smiley. When viewed in Pliny, those smilies are all over the place.

And inserting links seems to give Pliny apoplexy!

Me, too. I hate having to stop typing to keep groping for the smiley - mouse mouse.

Anyway - see you all in the November journals. Are there any new rules (I think, even if there aren't, I'll set myself a limit to the number of words, because people are going to get swamped again anyway. Perhaps everyone would appreciate it if I only wrote haikus.

In Pliny, you can just type the code for the smiley between angle brackets smiley - smiley

GB, the nanojopodoodah is also known as NaNoWriMo, the National November Writing Month.

Or in this case, a Journal a Day for a month.

Thanks Gnomon smiley - smiley

TC I think the sign-up thread says something about writing in the same journal (just changing the title/subject I assume) to save people not taking part being swamped (again) I recall this last year and did mass unsubbing without reading any which was a pity smiley - sadface

I seem to be so busy writing, subbing and curating that I miss the social aspect of h2g2 so I'm going to take part in the nano-thingy this year smiley - smiley

About smileys in Pliny:

If the code you write is the name of a real smiley and you put it in angle brackets, then it is displayed as a smiley. So putting ok with angle brackets around it will give you smiley - ok.

But if the code is a non-existent one such as bangsheadondesk and you put it in angle brackets, Pliny will not display it. It will be invisible.

Oh yes - I remember reading that. Since then I have taken to putting quotes and things in backwards brackets >>like this<<

I think Solnushka said that we are to write new journal per day like we did last year.

Also, if you like to show a pretend smiley, just leave a space between the brackets and the text, and it shouldn't be invisible.
Using the buttons in Pliny for smileys, should put the smiley at the end of the text, as far as I have noted. So if you just press the button as you go along, you can continue typing after the smiley, and use the next smiley when it's supposed to come.

But as for journals? Nah, I don't do much of that smiley - biggrin

smiley - towel

I still don't know if this means a "new" journal/new thread in everyone's convos, or *one* journal changing the title each day for the new journal entry = only one thread.

I'll be in Greece for the first 5 days of November so I won't be able to write a Journal every day.

Malabarista - now with added pony

Anyone who starts a new journal every day is going to be unfriended by me. I was totally stressed out by the sense of obligation last year, and by all those new convos swamping my list and pushing out the ones I actually chose to be subscribed to. Just a warning.

I've raised the point elsewhere that for those not involved it can come across as a month-long spam campaign, so for myself I'm going to do it in a more manageable way.

I did find it stressful last year when I wasn't taking part. This year when I saw the announcement I thought, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.smiley - laugh

I will write just one journal though, and post a new subject/title in the same thread each day, providing I'm here...just got my pre-admission clinic appointment for 5th Nov, so maybe my actual op will be the same month. I can but smiley - grovel
